When baby can hear

I've read in multiple places that if you sing a song to baby while pregnant the baby will recognize and even be soothed by the song when born. This is ADORABLE to me because my mom said when she was pregnant with me, she used to sing my name all the time and when I was born crying she sang it to me. I immediately started looking around for my mama. She's told me this story many times and I've always loved it. Lately I've been thinking about what I should sing to my baby. Any other moms here going to sing a song consistently to their baby? What song do you plan on singing?

Re: When baby can hear

  • With my first DH read stories. I sang and talked to baby. No particular songs until he was born. Now it's You've got a friend in me, and so this is love.

  • Aw those are good ones. I'm trying to think of ones like that. I don't really want to sing any kids songs, just kid friendly ones. I love to sing and have a little better than average voice, so I'm trying to think of a song I can sing well, but also quietly. Maybe something by carrie underwood :)
  • For my first pregnancy it was "my inner ninja" now since I have DS I sing "golden slumbers" often to comfort DS.
  • I love this idea! I didn't with my first but I'm going to with this one. Probably "O Shenandoah". It works as a lullaby and we live over a mountain ridge from the real thing.

I have a friend who picks a piece of classical music for each child and plays it to them in the womb. I might do that too! I'm partial to Renaissance polyphony. Perhaps some Vittoria or Purcell?

Maybe I'll go with a fine classic like "Who Let The Dogs Out?" or "Move Bitch".

I am a terrible singer and am embarrassed of singing, even to myself, so until B comes out I won't be singing except with music of a similar or louder volume than myself.  That's a sweet story, though.
Oh, but your own baby will find your singing beautiful! They've done studies. So knock yourself out! :-)

  • @CaitlinAnn24‌ Can you pass along the title of your songbook? I like good old folk songs but I can never remember the verses.

  • Disney lullabies are great and I will use them, but I will also sing comforting hymns and other meaningful songs which have been important and soothing in my life. I want my child to have music early on but I also want them to begin to learn values. Music is a great teacher!
  • 1) Look up the John Feierabend boxed set of music for infants and toddlers on Amazon. Fabulous. I can't say enough about this set.
    2) Sail Away. Eleanor Locke. Has 155 folk songs.
    3) 150 American Folk Songs. Peter Erdei.
    4) The Book of Children's Song Tales. Also John Feierabend. I sing these to my first graders often.
If you can't read music, I'm pretty sure the Feierabend series offers CDs for some of their stuff.
    Those are just a few.

  • The Beatles...all my loving and here comes the sun are two of my favorites!
  • @saltbox40 Snap! Through both my pregnancies I sang "you are my sunshine" even now it's a constant song I sing or play of them.
  • I believe it's somewhere are 18 weeks that the baby can hear noises from the outside. And yes, it's awesome that the baby can recognize your voice right from birth.

16 weeks I believe. At least that's what this website says! I really love the idea though, I've just been singing and talking anyways even though I know she/he can't hear me yet :)
  • I'll be singing whatever sing my toddler wants at the moment. This week is "how much is that doggie in the window"
  • Be careful with headphones on the belly! Keep the decibels pretty low if you really want to do it.
Also- nerd alert - I may or may not be learning Let It Go on my new ukulele so that I can sing it to my belly later. It's really pretty with ukulele.

  • I love this post! This is something I planned on doing also! I like to think I have a good voice, but nothing amazing. I love to sing though! I'll sing lullabies and other slow songs.

We've also already started buying our favorite children's books because my DH and I want to read a book each night to the baby too. I just think it will be a special time we can share and connect with the baby every day.

  • Got myself another month of not having to watch what I say & what type of music I listen.
My plan is to start next month with positive (non potty) words & relaxing music for the baby to enjoy

  • I never thought about what to sing to baby before it was born until now, but I imagine they will be songs my dad sang me when I was little, like "Return to Pooh Corner" and "Rainbow Connection" by Kenny Loggins. I still know every word to this day.
  • I'm not much of a singer... It doesn't even occur to me most of the time, but I love playing music and DS adores music. He is only 16 months and has known how to turn on the living room radio and adjust the volume for the longest time. I actually just dance with him more than anything. So I played music to DS when I was pregnant with him.
My DH was ALWAYS talking to DS when I was pregnant with him and after he was born and crying like crazy, DH picked him up and started talking to him and he just calmed right down. It was adorable!!
  • My poor child has to hear me sing along to Limp Bizkit and Bawditba or whatever its spelled like by Kid rock.

I hope my child can be rocked to sleep with Metallica or Soundgarden.

  • I would totally sing to my DS when he was in my belly. Also would talk to him. Same with DH. DH would hum a specific tune to him. Sure enough when he was born and crying DH hummed that tune and he went quiet. Will for sure be doing the same with thie LO. :x

  • When my nephew was born, he was a wild baby. I used sing Flo Rida/Sia's song to him.. mostly just the part "hey I heard you were a wild one, ooooo..". I know it's a little inappropriate haha, but it was popular at the time, catchy, and it soothed him.

Months later we were in the car and it came on. He definitely recognized the song and was jamming along to it.

I also just recently listened to a TED talk about how babies instinctively prefer their mom's voice and gravitate towards it. So amazing.
