Starting solids

edited October 2014 in April 2014 Moms
Just curious if I'm in the minority as LO is 23.5 weeks/5.5 months and we still haven't offered solids yet. I was going to start at 24 weeks because in my mind that is 6 months. DH pointed out that she won't be 6 actual months old until the end of October. Tomato tomahto...

Re: Starting solids

  • This is my first poll and everytime I hit save it added more options... My screen is cracked and doesn't always do what I want.
  • Loading the player...
  • I said 24 weeks but I'm not really sure how many weeks she is (6 months end of October) I just know we are going to give her something this weekend- she is showing a lot of interest, tried to grab my sandwich last weekend!
  • I said 24 weeks. We planned on waiting until 6 calendar months, which is still 2.5 wks away, but he's been going through a major growth spurt and ogling everyone else's food so badly that we decided to give banana a try tonight. He's sucked me dry of milk, so I'm hoping that starting solids will give me a break.

  • I've been doing weekly photos so that's how I've kept track. LO will be 6 months end of the month. She's showing a ton of interest.... I was originally going to start on my next photo shoot day, now I'm conflicted.

I tend to over think things.

When will you allow food at day care?
  • Food at daycare is something you just have to feel out. Once he starts getting the hang of eating, I might do a meal at daycare - probably 2-4 weeks into starting solids.

  • I have no idea how many weeks DD is. Shes 5m 1w now. We have been giving solids for one meal (purees) for about 2 weeks.

  • We started after she turned 5 months and it's been such a life saver for me! One of the hardest parts of my day was cooking dinner bc she's always fussy around that time too and wants me to hold her (ugh!) Now I plop her in the chair and hand her the mesh feeder or a piece of a mum mum and crank dinner out like a champ!

  • He just turned 5 months and I introduced smashed banana and a few sips of water from a sippy cup to wash that down 2 weeks ago, everyone's happy. Moving onto sweet potato next week, just for fun he only gets about a tablespoon down a day, EBF otherwise.
  • I introduced cereal at 4 months but he didn't care for it. He'd been and still is showing interest in our food since before then. He's only just now finally liking purees. I'm not consistent with solids because I think BLW will be a better fit for us. I probably will combine it with purees though.
  • Also in the cloth diapers camp, so not planning to start before 6 months. I'm also really not in a hurry for my little boy to grow up :(

  • We started BLW at 5 months because DS was super ready.  Not that he's actually eaten anything, we're still getting EBF poop, but he gets to taste and play with food every night.

  • I voted 4 months because we did rice cereal 3x followed by one night of sweet potatoes, and then a night of butternut squash and then a taste of bananas over the span of the month. I don't think he is truly ready thus me ONLY offering when he gets really food grabby and chewy (he constantly looks like he is chewing!). I figure we will have fun, try things- he got gassy with rice cereal so no more of that but tolerated the other foods really well- but would get frustrated and wanted to nurse after eating. He will be 5 months this weekend. We tried solids with him early since the pediatrician recommended it due to his large appetite.

I planned on waiting until 6 calendar months, but she's showing all the signs of readiness. She can sit on her own and is very interested in food and mimicks chewing, so I think I may buy some bananas and avocados next time I go to the store and let her try. DH gave her a few little tastes of a fruit pouch he was eating, and she seemed to enjoy it, so I think we will just give it a shot

ETA: she's 23 weeks today (according to the bump e-mails)

  • We started around 4 months.  Usually a little oatmeal and/or banana.  She's also had avocado(was not a fan), sweet potato, pear, apple, plum, and melon.
  • Tried at 4 months but neither of my twins were really into it. By 5 months one was getting the hang of it. We did occasional cereal. At 6 months we added fruits and veggies which Baby A did great with but Twin B still wasn't interested. She's finally gotten on board just this week (will be 7 mo next week). She especially likes pears and fruit smoothies. Planning to do sweet potato tomorrow

Our pedi recommend me to start with the rice cereal at 5.5 months and then add the orange vegetables for 2 weeks , 2 weeks of yellow veggies ,2 of green veggies , 2 weeks alternate them and at the end the fruits .

And I am not completely sure about that.

but one thing is true because I remember with my son try the fruits he didn't want the veggies .

Edit: these is because she is allergic to creams ,lotion ,shampoo we don't know if the formula was doing it too , so we need to see if the food is going to do something funky .
  • I honestly don't have a set time we will start solids. I started pretty early with DS1 and in retrospect  I feel like I made life a bit more difficult for myself. So I kinda want to wait until closer to 6 months this time. That being said, I have a jar of carrots in the cupboard that I am dying to give him.

  • I started with mashed avocado at 5 months. She ate that for 2 weeks and then I gave her pureed sweet potato. Today, she had avocado again and was pissed because I was taking too long to mash it. Lesson learned, don't let her see the food til it's ready. Sheesh. Oh, and she's had water in a sippy cup. Gonna try a frozen banana tomorrow because she's teething.
  • We started at 4 months but that was in very small amounts, even now we don't give food every day, when he has it he loves it, he had puréed veg Sunday and cried between each spoonful as mummy wasn't feeding him fast enough X_X I think he is going to be a greedy one like his dad
  • Bananas (meh), peaches (yuck!), mashed potatoes (yum!), squash (yum!), puréed sweet corn (meh). Gonna try avocado with her as soon as the couple I've gotten are ripe, and some baked sweet potato after that. With the mashed potatoes and squash, she was lunging toward the spoon. Couldn't shovel it in fast enough! XD

I said 6 months, but it will probably end up being a week before he turns 6 months. I have no idea how many weeks that is. He sits in the high chair with us for meals and noms on his frozen breastmilk right now. We do BLW but I'm not super pumped for it because EBF diapers are so much easier to clean.

  • Six months. Though Liam has been sitting in his high chair for a month during dinner and grabs at our food/cups if he's on a lap while we're eating, so he's definitely showing interest.

  • We started at five months we do BLW. We started because he was ready and we were having weight gain issues. He turns six months tomorrow and eats everything we do with a few pouches mixed in to actually help the weight gain. He loves food and les to eat. Broccoli carrots, peas, and waffles are his favorites.
  • LO is still EBF but at 4 months and a week(ish), we started a little rice cereal at dinner before tubby time and night time feeding. It wouldn't be every night but maybe 4 nights a week. At 5 months, we started oatmeal cereal every night and then on Tuesday of this week (5 months and about 9 days?) we started oatmeal in the morning and veggies at night. Started on sweet potatoes and even though she wasn't too sure about them at first, she ate 1-2 ounces the last two nights and fussed in between spoonfuls since I guess I wasn't going fast enough! :)

  • My LO just turned 6 months and we've been experimenting. She's had avocado, tomato, sweet potato, broccoli, hummus, bAnana/oat pancakes, strawberries, banana and eggs, Greek yogurt..She's liked everything so far!!

I'm loving the idea of BLW but am having a hard time watching her.. To be honest, it stresses me out! She gagged on the broccoli and it freaked me out :( I'm not sure I'll be able at tough it out..

  • I put longer than 6 months, but really its about 6 months. DD was a month premature and has made up for it and doing great. She turned 6 months yesterday (5 months adjusted) and her 6 month check up is later next week. I plan to talk with her pediatrician before starting. Most likely next weekend we will start.
  • Our pedi and the LC advised to wait until 6 calendar months, but I'm all for BLW and since DS was sitting un-assisted, chewing like crazy, had 2 teeth and is working on 4 more and is reaching for all of our food and trying to eat it at 5 months we started introducing foods this past weekend at 23 weeks. I figure it will be a few weeks before he gets the hang of it so why not start a little now, he's definitely ready and is already holding his spoon and jamming it into his mouth.

  • We're doing a combo between "real" food and purees. I'm doing my best not to engage in conversations with MIL or my mom about food. I'm sure they already think I'm crazy since I didn't start with cereal at 4 months and it's not a part of his diet right now and I've given him appropriate-sized pieces of sweet potato and squash for him to gum and feed himself.

My goal is to have him feeding himself "real" food by Thanksgiving.
I'm in the same boat with our family and friends. They don't understand our "new" ways of doing things and I literally have had to argue with people over why I refuse to start with cereal and why I'm definitely not putting cereal in DS' bottles. Luckily my mum didn't believe in cereal either and started us on solids that she was already making for herself for dinner, she didn't have time to make separate meals for us as kids with 4 babies or to sit with us for an hour to feed us, so we got real food appropriate-sized that we man handled and I'm following suit with DS.

  • We haven't done any yet and DS2 is 7 calendar months, 5.5 adjusted.  I have no idea how many weeks he is.

We didn't start solids until almost 9 months with DS1 because he showed no interest, and DS2 hasn't either yet.  I'm in no rush.

  • I picked flying monkey (lol) cause we are SS. I have no idea. We will probs do baby led weaning and he isn't showing any readiness signs yet. I think DS is 24 weeks today but he doesn't give a crap about food and isn't sitting up.

Started at 24 weeks in desperation that he would sleep better at night (he didnt) with oatmeal & BM around dinner time. Did that for a week switched it to the morning and started introducing veggies one at a time. He's had all the veggies and were almost through the fruits which we now mix with his oatmeal in the morning. He loves it and does great. I love the concept of BLW but I know with only having an hour after work before he goes to bed I won't have the time to give him the variety he needs. I had purées as a baby and did fine so he will too haha
  • I am less judgemental now that I'm a mom. That's my UO.
  • I mash the avocado into a super fine mush, like creamy guacamole. Should help with the coughing.
  • LO is 2 wks away from being 6mo.
She's had grapes and a bit of graham cracker.
    Blw all the way!

  • For those that do BLW - when do babies usually start eating the food? As of right now we're doing breakfast and lunch but I'm wondering when I should start 3 meals a day..is it around 1?
