Clogged tear ducts?

Ive been lurking for awhile and haven't seen any posts about this recently. Anyone else's little ones getting clogged tear ducts? I feel like she has them frequently! We have been to the pediatrician for it and they say it's completely normal and gave us an antibiotic as well. Anything anyone is doing to help prevent and treat these?

Re: Clogged tear ducts?

  • My pedi said to squirt some breastmilk on it, not sure if that is an option for you but I think it helped clear ours!

I was told to take a warm damp wash cloth and gently apply pressure from the inside of the eye down the side of the nose, gently pulling while doing so.

  • Oh they didn't mention near the nose. Will try that!
  • DD had it when she was born. We did breast milk and massaged it like @ns1‌ said. We did it a few times a day during diaper changes. We also had drops from our pedi to use when it got really gunky.

But yea, it's pretty common and it usually resolves by the time they turn one.

  • DD has it too in her right eye. Some days are worse than others. In the mornings, I take a wet cotton ball and massage all the crusties out of her eye. Like PPs said, it is  normal and our pedi said it should resolve itself w/in 1 year.

This. DD1 didn't resolve on her own by 12months so she ended up having surgery. But in 90% of cases they do clear up on their own, we just got unlucky!

We had one around 1 month of age and pedi recommended a warm wash cloth with a tiny bit of Johnson's No More Tears rubbed on eye lid to loosen up the crustiness. He said it wouldnt hurt her eyes at all(hence "no more tears' name) and to do that daily. Ours cleared up in about 2 weeks. Good luck!

We did this and it worked as well. He used to have it really bad in one eye - like every morning his left eye was junky. And he never used to get tears in his right eye. So I used to do the massage thing to his nose, and then they stopped getting junky and tears now flow freely from both.

My MIL told me that my husband had clogged tear ducts when he was a baby and they didn't clear out by the time he was 8 months, so he had surgery. Apparently they cleared themselves by the time he was a year old though ....

  • Our pediatrician recommended to rub the duct area before each diaper change but that only time will cause it to stop happening (as it is a result of how small the duct is).

  • Do you apply the breastmilk to the eye duct?
