Weaning from the bottle-eating more food

Ok so this has most likely been discussed but I couldn't easily find it in a search so here goes.

Whether you're weaning from breastfeeding or formula how are you going about doing it? The babies still have 4 bottles a day for a total of 24 ounces of formula. Do I just really need to get with it and feed them more 'real' food so they gradually stop? We've moved to a sippy for one of the bottles but they are still consuming a lot of formula.

I certainly don't want them to go hungry but not quite sure how I should approach this. They do get breakfast and lunch of 'real' food at daycare and then an additional snack when they get home at 5.

Any thoughts? Tips? Suggestions??

24 oz isn't outlandish, I think the goal is 16-20 oz of dairy per day (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.)

Try aiming for for 3 meals of solids (6-8oz of food each) and 2 snacks (2-4oz of food each) per day and see if that helps them decrease a bit.

  • Thanks everyone! I'm not determined to have them weaned by their birthday just starting to look beyond that.  I know that formula has all the nutrients and such that they need and I'm nervous to make that switch to wcm and just food. Nervous that they won't be getting everything they need.

But I'm sure they adjust their diets and consume more food as they need it.

  • It appears that we're on the slow path to weaning from formula.  DS isn't a fan of eating solid foods and outright refuses purees these days.  So, I'm battling a kid who is practically running all day and needs the calories but hates to eat food.  We were consistently at 28-30 oz of formula a day before he was walking with some purees and finger foods mixed in.  I'm now at 30-40 oz of formula/day with no desire to eat much of anything other than snack at day care (which is normally graham crackers, nilla wafers, cheezits, etc).

Because of my concern that his formula intake has increased and desire to eat food has significantly decreased, he is being evaluated for early intervention next Wed.  We'll see if he's got some sort of sensory issue or whether he's just a VERY picky eater.

  • DS is down to 14oz. of formula a day. He gets an 8 oz. bottle in the morning and 6 oz. before bed. He gets WCM with breakfast, lunch and dinner (4 oz. in a sippy) and then water throughout the day. I'm planning on finishing up the tub of formula I have now before I fully wean to WCM.

  • Well we just bought our month's worth of formula so they won't be off that totally until at least November sometime-especially if I start mixing in wcm.

Thank you all for the feedback!

  • We started off very slowly, adding one ounce at a time to her formula. When I got to a full sippy of milk (last week), I have decreased the amount of wcm and offer a snack at the same time. Other then that I'll offer milk at breakfast, nap and bed. She is not as into solids as DS was so my plan my change if I feel she's not getting enough solids.

  • Dd is 1 on Friday, so she's in the older pack. For us it was fairly easy to get to eating more solids. DD has not met a food she didn't like, so we are lucky in that regard.

Getting off the bottle has been hard. I've tried like 6 different types of sippy cups. Finally, the one with the straw that you don't have to press and suck at the same time seems to be working. I made the mistake of giving her too much WCM one night and she was up all night with a tummy ache. So I would def recommend going gradually!

I was easing DD into WMC until today.  Daycare ran out of her formula and didn't tell me, so they gave her WCM for her two daycare bottles today.  She ate a lot more food at daycare.  I am hoping she doesnt get sick, but so far she seems ok. DD turned 1 last weekend, so I probably needed a bit of a push.  Transitioning off of formula still feels weird to me,
