NCDR: Mesh crib bumper?

So I am just starting to try to get R to nap in his crib. He moves around a lot and keeps sticking his feet/legs out of the bars and getting stuck. I know normal crib bumpers are not supposed to be used, but what about the really open mesh ones? Any thoughts on this? They look just like the sides of the Arms Reach co-sleeper we have...

DS is almost 4 months and can't roll yet.

I bought some.....ds still got limbs stuck......so IMO they aren't worth it.

I researched them a couple years ago. Back then anyway the concensus seemed to be that they were safe from a SIDS point of view, but that just like normal bumpers you should take them down when baby starts pulling up since they can be wadded up and used to get a boost up and over the crib rail. So your time to use them is limited. We ended up not getting one because G wasn't a big mover in his sleep and rarely got stuck in the crib slats.

I used them with N. If nothing else, they helped keep paci's in the crib. I'm not sure if L will need them since he hates all paci's so far.

Yeah we used it primarily to keep paci in the crib too. She has never attempted to be a crib climber, so it was in there until she was at least 15 months old (if not later - I can't really remember). She never got limbs stuck between rails, so maybe it helped with that? I really liked it though!

I thought about getting one for DD because she was getting mobile and getting her legs stuck but I read so many bad reviews from so many places where people said that they didn't help keep their limbs from getting stuck. So I decided that it wasn't worth it.

I got one specifily for keeping pacifiers in the crib. I have no fear of it being a suffocation risk as it's very thin, though I should remove it soon as she is starting to climb.

We use them and they work great. Colin is the squirmiest baby ever so I asked our doctor about the mesh ones at our two month appointment. She said his head and neck control were so great she wasn't worried about SIDS risks with the mesh ones.

They have kept Colin's limbs out of the slats, but I do plan to remove them once he starts climbing mode so he can't use them to climb out or anything like that.

AAP now states that even the "breathable" bumpers are not proven to be safe. They still restrict airflow around the baby, which has a higher chance of causing SIDS. Also, they pose a risk of having the child get tangled in them and strangling to death. Sort of like the crib tent thing. Those were just being phased out around the time Rosie was 6-9 months. Now they are illegal. Bumpers just aren't safe. We've never used one.

Well darn. So how do I keep his legs inside? I wouldn't care except it pisses him off because he gets stuck.

I, however, am a rule breaker.

H had impressive episodes of getting his legs out between the slats of the crib.

I think it's the baby getting wrapped all in it and stuck, not the bumper coming off and wrapping around

Do you use a sleep sack or something that could keep his legs a little contained?

The baby boutique near me started carrying a mesh bumper with a panel that goes under the mattress so it can't ride up and pose a strangulation risk. Unfortunately it's around $50.

Really, it's a matter of time before bumpers join the crib tent in the products of nursery past. Many cities already ban the sale of crib bumpers. All forms of them.
