5.5 Week & No Fetal Pole?

Hi Ladies,

This is my first post, and unfortunately a bit of a nervous one! I took an at-home test on 9/24, and it came back positive. My husband and I are both very excited (and shocked/overwhelmed) because we just started trying 2 months prior.

My last period start date was 8/22, so I'm about 5.5wks along. I went to my GYN today for a pregnancy confirmation, and she did an internal ultrasound (which surprised me because I was expecting just a pee or blood test). A sac and yolk we're visible, but no fetal pole. She then took blood, and rescheduled me for another ultrasound next week.

While it's confirmed that I'm pregnant, my doctor was VERY cautious not to confirm that its a viable pregnancy until she sees the fetal pole and heartbeat. She did say it may be a bit early, but I did sense that she expected to see more then she did.

Is this normal at 5.5 wks? It's going to be a long week waiting for my next ultrasound, so whatever thoughts or advice you can all share would be much-appreciated!

Re: 5.5 Week & No Fetal Pole?

  • I had an ultra sound at 5.5 weeks as well and there was no fetal pole/heartbeat quite yet. Went back a week and a day later and we saw the heartbeat :)

    Good luck! :)

  • Yes normal. My OB won't even do an us until after 6 weeks because 5 weeks is just to early to confirm a preg.

I had an us yesterday I'm 5w3d measuring 5w4d and no fetal pole which my RE said he didn't expect.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I am not sure about fetal pole but not hearing a heartbeat that early is very normal. I saw my dr last week at like 6w4d and he wouldnt even do an u/s because he said it was too early. I am going back tomorrow at 7w6d to have it done.
  • I will not my 1st appt until 7w6d because My doctor does not start taking patients until the 8th week, exactly for this reason! I would try not to worry too much ( I know that is hard to do), stay positive! :)

  • Thank you, ladies! I appreciate the positive feedback. I'll try to keep it in mind and not stress too much this week.

  • For what it's worth I had my first ultrasound today, they saw a gestational sac and a yolk sac and dated me to 5w5d and said it was totally normal for 5w5d (only trouble is I'm actually 6w5d). So I suspect and hope you're fine.

  • Echoing what others said...we didn't see the fetal pole until we were measuring 6w3d.  You're probably going to be just fine.  Hang in there!
