Recommend your dollhouse

Hi Ladies,

I am already starting to think about Christmas.  baby #2 is due early December and I would like to have a lot of my shopping done before he comes.  I don't want the stress of shopping hanging over my head while I'm home trying to take care of a newborn and a toddler.

Anyway, DH and I want to buy a dollhouse for DD from Santa.  She's 2.5.  I was looking at the kidkraft ones but they look huge.  We want something she can grow into but we don't want it to be so enormous that it takes up her entire bedroom.  Our house is not that big and I also don't really want to spend close to $200 for a dollhouse.

Re: Recommend your dollhouse

  • We have an Imaginarium (I think that is a Toys R Us brand). It is a larger (3 story), plywood type dollhouse that fits in a corner, so it doesn't take up too much room. I got it for $40 + tax at Toys R Us last October and then we put it together on Christmas Eve. It was originally $100 but it was their Red Hot Deal and when I saw the ad I ran over there and they had 1 left (my lucky day). I have no complaints. Ours has held up extremely well but it is only occasionally played with.

I couldn't find it on the TRU website but here it is on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Imaginarium-My-Corner-Dollhouse/dp/B0096FBR7K

  • More Little People here.  Same set up, and all three kids have played with/play with them.  For a real deal dollhouse, depends on what you want.  We have tried a few different things, and the one that was played with the most was not the spendy wooden three story gorgeous dollhouse.  It was the Polly Pocket dollhouse that was a hand me down.

  • We have the Melissa and Doug hi-rise dollhouse.  It's HUGE, but it's a lot more tall than wide, so it doesn't actually have too big of a footprint.  And the size makes it easier for DD (who is 2) to play with.  She especially loves the garage and the elevator.

One note - this thing was a B*TCH to put together.  Seriously, it took my husband and I 3 hours, and we never did get one of the screws in.  It's sturdy, so buy it assembled off craigslist if you can.

  • I bought the KidKraft one for my 2.5 year old niece.  It is a little big, but it folds which is nice for storage.  Also, it comes up on woot.com every now and then for about $70.

  • We have the fisher price loving family dollhouse. It's great - dd has grown into it and still loves it (5 next week). Dd2 - 18 months - also loves it. Pieces aren't too small, but not so chunky that dd1 lost interest. It looks big, but folds up and is pretty contained.
  • We just have a little Melissa and Doug dollhouse. DD1 wasn't really interested in it until she was almost 3. What I like about it is that it has a toliet, a bathroom sink and a bathtub, so it was helpful during potty training. The dolls could use the bathroom too.

We have this one and it's really cute.  There are also lots of pieces available to add to it.
