Back Injury. What to do? *UPDATE* Kidney stone =(

TL/DR: I have unbearable back pain when I move. I have already seen my OB and determined all is fine with baby. Not contractions. Should I: 1) go to ER? 2) get a physical therapy referral? Or 3) go to a chiropractor? Monday night I did an intense walking workout on the treadmill. I woke up yesterday morning with intense back pain in my lower right side. It would come and go with differing intensity. I worried I may be having contractions. OB confirmed my cervix was closed and babys heartbeat was normal. She did urinalysis and found a small trace of blood which made her think it could possibly be a kidney stone. However, she says my pain would probably be completely debilitating and I would have difficulty peeing and other symptoms which I don't have. She concluded it was a muscular injury from the treadmill and for me to take tylenol and rest. I did that last night and felt great. I woke up feeling great too. But now that I have been moving the pain is back and seems to be worse. When I am still I feel completely fine but moving is horrible. I called my doctor back for her input and am waiting for a return call. I feel like my only options here are to go to the ER (notttt what I want), to get a referral for physical therapy or make an appointment with a chiropractor. Have any of you ladies experienced something like this or have any advice to share? I'm dreading every time I have to stand up to pee. By the time I get back to my desk I am almost in tears from pain! Update in comments below

  • I would probably go to a chiropractor.  They do amazing things - especially if you have one that uses an activator as opposed to the kind that just wrenches you around.  I'd try that route first, and maybe see if you can get in to see a doc to see if muscle relaxors are safe to use.

  • Go see a physical therapist. There are some that are specially trained to deal with pre and post natal issues. I really don't think a chiro is what you need.
  • I'd say chiro or pt. Sounds like sciatica to me..?

Maybe set up an appt for both pt and chiro and go to the cheaper one first? I know my pt copay is way cheaper than chiro copay. If the first doesn't help, go to the other appt.

  • Thanks ladies. Have put in a call to a family friend who is a licensed chiropractor. Hope to see him ASAP and get this sorted out. Still haven't heard back from my doctor but I feel like this is the best route.

  • Update: Boo. My OB called back and wants me to have a kidney u/s before I go to chiro or referred to PT. Earliest she could get it scheduled was Friday at 8am. She also called in Rx of 5mg of flexeril if pain is really bad. Or said I could go to ER. Feeling conflicted now.

  • What about a massage?  If it's muscular, a massage would help.  There's definitely no harm in a prenatal massage, mama!

  • Oye. I'd still try the chiropractor in the mean time. It can't hurt. A massage is also a good idea. Then see what your ob says Friday. Gl!

  • So I went to the chiropractor on Wednesday night and it didn't help at all.  By 11pm I was in excruciating pain so I had DH take me to the ER.  4 hours later after lots of kidney and bladder ultrasounds, they decided I definitely had a kidney stone and a bladder infection.  Sent me home with low dose hydrocodone, antibiotic and zofran with instructions to come back immediately if I developed fever or started vomiting.  I spent most of the day yesterday in bed and managed to get into the urologist that afternoon.  They wouldn't touch me since I was pregnant and set up an appointment for me in April - hah!  I have been CHUGGING water and trying to minimally take the pain meds.  I think today the stone has made it into my bladder because I no longer feel the shooting pain in my back, but lots of pressure/uncomfortableness in my front lower abdomen.  Please pray that this kidney stone comes out soon and the pain is minimal!  I've managed to stay off the pain meds since 8pm last night and hoping it stays that way!

  • Thanks ladies! It is NO fun at all. Apparently this pain is similar to the amount of pain I will feel during labor, so maybe it's good practice?! I'm hoping Pocahontas and some of my mom's spaghetti will help move things along. Both my comfort items!

  • @DronkeyGal I've had kidney stones a couple of times (some needing surgery, some just a stent, and some waiting it out) Last one I had was at the beginning of pregnancy with DD. Get some lemonade!!! The acidity can help break down the stones and you need to stay super hydrated. Good luck! I know it is awful... And not to burst your bubble, but labor was still way worse! Whoever said kidney stones were worse was definitely MALE and trying to make themselves feel better! (At least with labor you have an absolutely amazing result that makes it all worth it and makes us forget about the pain!)

  • I've never passed one pregnant, but they suck! I second citrus drinks, just watch the sugar content. I became septic when I passed my last one (well 3 at once) so if you start vomiting really bad call the Dr or go to the ER.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies! I've been chugging water and can tell it's near my bladder. This shit just got real. Screaming in the bathroom and just had to take a pain pill. Sorry baby =( and yes I will go straight to ER if I am vomiting or have fever. I sure wish this stone was made out of diamonds so I would have something to look forward to. Is there such thing as a push present for a kidney stone? If not I'm going to start it.

  • Feel better! I'm so sorry you're going through that!
  • Hope you pass the stone soon!  Sorry you have to go through this.

  • How are you doing? I went to L&D Monday with kidney pain and passed some stones on Tuesday. I've been having bladder pain all afternoon.
  • @farmerchic‌ I passed my stone on Saturday. It was about a 5 day ordeal with the worst pain being on Saturday when it was passing into my bladder. Low dose hydrocodone helped get me through the pain and I felt completely normal again by this Tuesday. It was not fun AT ALL but thankfully it's over. Sorry you had to go through that as well. How are you feeling?

  • I'm glad you're feeling better. I am having fairly bad pain right behind my pubic bone on the right side (the side my stones were on). I've had it nearly all day. I don't know if it's more stones in my bladder needing to come out or something else. I've been dealing with pain on and off for 2 weeks, tomorrow. I'm getting oretty tired of this. I just got a script for hydrocodone yesterday because my OB said I'd probably get more stones throughout pregnancy. I haven't had to take any yet but I'm worried it's just going to keep getting worse.
