Has anyone done or considered prenatal yoga?

I read that helps with labor by stretching everything out and breathing techniques. Any opinions or experiences?

Re: Has anyone done or considered prenatal yoga?

  • I did a pregnancy yoga DVD with my first pregnancy. I guess it was helpful for L&D. More helpful were the Bradley classes :)

That said, I'll do pregnancy yoga again. It feels good.

I love yoga so I'm planning on looking for some prenatal classes close by.  Want to make sure I don't do anything I shouldn't be doing!
  • Prenatal yoga is so great! It feels good and gave me a form of exercise to look forward to while being pregnant. I highly recommend it!

  • i've been doing 20-40 minutes of prenatal yoga everyday since our BFP. i'm not taking a class or anything, i just hopped on pinterest and found some that looked good and gave them a try! :) just be careful, make sure its PRENATAL and not post baby or regular yoga... there are positions that pregnant women are not supposed to do.

  • I did prenatal yoga last pregnancy.  It didn't really help with labor or breathing but it was my only exercise so it was good.  This time around I'm lifting heavier weights (almost crossfit style) and that's more my thing now so I'm gonna skip the prenatal yoga (plus I really don't have time in the evenings).

  • I do prenatal yoga! I did quite a bit of yoga before getting pregnant so was not willing to give it up!
  • I did it some last pregnancy and enjoyed it. I will probably try to do it again this time for relaxation but I also plan on keeping up with CrossFit as my main form of exercise.

  • I am really interested in trying it this time. my last pregnancy I had some trouble with my abs not being strong enough for how big I got (that's what the doctor said, idk it was painful though), ended up on partial bedrest my last tri. I am hoping that maybe yoga and being a little more careful with how I eat will help prevent that this time around.
  • Reviving this thread to ask: what week do most people start prenatal yoga?
  • I am also a big fan of prenatal yoga. I was really into hot yoga prior to my bfp, but , "no, no, no heat", was the first thing my OB told me when asking him about continuing it during pregnancy. So prenatal yoga and some "gentle flow" classes are all I got to keep me on the yoga train.
  • @bluedaisy2001‌ I would recommend telling your instructor that you are new to yoga in general as there may be postures and positions you may not know or feel comfortable doing off the bat. However, I really feel that prenatal yoga is an awesome way to get started in your yoga journey as it is extremely mild and a nice time to relax for yourself and baby.
  • I'm also interested in trying prenatal yoga, but I live in a small town that doesn't offer any classes :( anyone have any recommendations for DVDs or online videos?

  • I've been sticking with my regular weekly class at my gym. The instructor is really good so she will be able to help me modify as needed.

  • @bluedaisy2001‌ I'm in the same boat - never could hang with yoga before, but would like to try it now.
  • I just ordered a prenatal yoga dvd from amazon. I got Elena browser; element. It was recommended to me. Everything hurts this time around and I have restless legs so I'm praying it helps.

  • Loved prenatal yoga when I was pregnant with DD. My instructor also helped us learn about breathing techniques and how your body changes during pregnancy. And the meditations (which admittedly always felt a bit silly to me before) were really helpful during labor!

  • I have been doing prenatal Pilates and I'm loving it! Being a STM I can already see how some of the exercises will help a lot during labor. And the stretches are doing wonders for my lower back. :)

Ha!!! Me too!!! Groupon is my best friend. I think my doctor's office has prenatal yoga classes!!
  • I'm going to take my first prenatal yoga class on Friday morning... they studio here only offers 1 class per week so I'll see how it goes before I commit to the weekly sessions. My lower back has been hurting so hopefully some of the stretching can help with that.

I would highly recommend it. Not only does it stretch and distress but can also help with IBS, general digestive issues, turning round a breach baby,... The benefits are endless. DVDs are good but do go to a class if you can as they will help with posture so you don't do any damage. Good luck!
  • I have tried yoga pre-pregnancy and really loved it so I think I'm going to give it a go. (I do have this fear that I will accidently do a little trump mid pose tho! Especially because it's always so quiet - eeek!)
  • Yep. I have done it with all my pregnancies. While I know there are benefits for labor for me it was about staying fit and getting good stretches and feeling better. Now that I am on #3 I really enjoy the quiet time!!!

  • I'm still doing regular but have dropped in to some prenatal sessions. You can go anytime!! One by me spends at least 15-20 minutes at the start letting everyone talk about their pregnancy which is great if you don't know anyone else who is

Last week in my regular yoga class, the lady just over my right shoulder was just letting them rip at one point in the class. It's soooo hard to be a mature adult about farting and I'm so glad we were rolling around in Happy Baby where no one could see my face so I could at least partly lose my composure. So freaking hysterical.

  • I wasn't into exercising before pregnancy but doctor said walking and yoga is totally fine. I bought a prenatal yoga dvd and it is nice because you can do modifications for each tri.
  • Just tried it for the 1st time earlier this week. YouTube has a series (i think 5 episodes, only did 2 so far) and reaceach is a little over 10 min long. I've never done yoga before and it was easy with good stretches. Felt pretty good :)
  • Doyogawithme dot com. Has several prenatal yoga videos. I've done a couple of the shorter videos and will be taking some classes at my local yoga studio soon, the times are just not great withy schedule.
