WWYD--Question about induction

So tomorrow is my 40 week appointment. Little lady is still riding high so no doubt I'll be waiting a bit more. At my appt however, I will need to pick a date to be induced between 41-42 weeks. I'm low risk (albeit with GBS) and it's not like she's a large Marge so I don't want to rush, but at the same time...get the heck out already! Have you guys thought about how long you'll let them hang in there?

  • I think we set a loose schedule with my first. Like 41 weeks and a few days, whatever day my OB was on call. I think I had another appointment scheduled for 41 weeks though, and we planned to re-evaluate at that time. I showed no progress at my 40 week appt but went into labor later that day (no membrane strip or other steps taken), so thankfully it was a moot point.

I hope your gal gets a move on before then, I remember how distraught I was to actually make the induction appt!

I would keep baby in as long as doctor would let me, as long as she was healthy and not humongous. Giving baby the opportunity to come on his/her own is always best, IMHO. Clearly sometimes they have to be forced out but I would try to delay that as much as possible, even if that meant being really uncomfortable for me.

  • I'd go with the last day they will let you to give yourself the best chance of going into labor on your own.  Your OB knows your unique medical history and situation and can weigh that against typical recommendations.

  • I am in your exact position now! Dr. said we should schedule induction in my 41st week. Based on the hospital I want to deliver at, my Dr. said she delivered there on Wed/Thurs - so we'll be scheduling induction for one of those days next week (oct 8/9). We don't have a preference, but sometimes we don't get the choice based on the schedule...so I'm just waiting for that call this week to set up the day...and HOPE I can go into labor naturally before that.

I agree with PPs, to go as late as possible! Our LO is still a bit high and low risk, so I'm anticipating going into next week with no baby.

    Good luck!

  • Obvi I'll see what tomorrow brings. I know I definitely don't want the doctor who gave me the horrible cervical exam. I think the date I choose would depend solely on that! I need to find out her schedule and have a chat with my belly about what days she's NOT allowed to arrive!
  • I had a positive induction experience last week. Yes being continuously monitored was less than ideal but overall I had a very good labor.

Do what you ob suggests but know that all inductions are not a rx for a section.
