Blood in milk after pumping

So, yeah, gross. I had blood in the milk I pumped from my left breast just now. I have a tiny cut on that nipple which I found after pumping. I tossed the milk but I am worried this is the beginning of infection? anyone had any experiance with this? I plan to call my OBGYN in the morning, but wondered if you guys had any ideas.

  • I had blood in my milk once too from a crack in my nipple. Since my babies are in the Nicu I thought there was no way they would use it and threw it away. I asked a couple of the nurses and they said it was completely fine and just called it strawberry milk. They said to put a little breast milk on my nippe each time to dry and use the lanolin cream. Another mom told me to use coconut oil because it goes on easy and has antibacterial properties. However the Nicu discouraged it because there hasn't been enough research to support it and the babies could allergic.

  • The milk is totally okay.  I had a crack in my nipple for awhile, and LO had blood in his spitup- totally disgusting, but it didn't bother him any.
  • It's okay to give it to him? Wow, I never heard that before.
  • If LO swallows enough blood, it will make his poop black, just so you're aware.  This happened to my LO once- again, it was gross, but didn't bother him at all.
