Leaving nursing toddler for 4 days

Just want to know other's experiences. DD is 18 months and I need to travel for work for 4 days. She nursing in the AM and PM and an occasional middle of the night. I am 9 weeks pregnant and have very little milk left so she is mostly dry nursing. I know every child is different but did anyone have a similar situation? Did your toddler still want to nurse when you returned? I have never been away overnight just the occasional evening or early morning before she woke up. I'm hoping it won't be the end of her nursing.

  • That's so hard to say what will happen.  I would have suggested that you pump to keep your supply in case she still wants it, but since you're pregnant that's a little different. Were you planning on tandem nursing, or were you going to wean her before the new one arrives?  If you were going to wean her anyway, this will probably be the best way to go about it. It will give her enough time that she should forget about nursing before she sees the new baby nursing down the road.  At 18 months they'll remember it a lot longer.  If you're open to tandem nursing, I'd just offer her the breast once you got home, and hope she takes it.  GL!

  • Thanks for the advice. I was going to tandem nurse if she didn't wean herself before the new LO arrives. I always wait for her to ask instead of just lifting my shirt automatically so I will do the same when I get back. We shall see.

  • I just went on an overnight trip with DH for 4 nights. My DD is 15 months and I was 19 weeks pregnant for the trip. DD nurses on a similar schedule to your LO. I hand expressed twice daily to mimic the missed nursing sessions. DD went eight back to nursing as usual. Good luck on your trip!
  • I was away for 3 nights and my LO was perfectly happy to nurse when I got back. She's 14 months. GL and have a safe trip!
  • I was only gone for a day and a half when DS was that age, but he went right back to nursing.
  • Thanks for your experience ladies.  I will bring along my pump just in case.

  • @jko454‌ I took my manual pump on my trip but couldn't get anything out. I stopped responding to my double electric pump around 10ish weeks. You may want to look up hand expressing just in case.
  • Thanks.  I actually find hand expressing much easier too. I always had to do compressions when using my electric pump - such a PITA.  And since the work trip is to Europe I won't have to worry about plugs. I don't own a manual pump.
