Issues with different types of milk

I am in a territory I have no experience in. So I need some help.

My daughter is close to a year old. Like in 2 days she will be 1. At 10 1/2 months I completely dried up. She refused formula and we opted to put her on goats milk after 24 hours. She was eating pureed food. Yes, the Pedi knew. The decision was to move her to cows milk 2 weeks ago. Fine. Except she apparently has a cows milk intolerance. Not the first time I have seen that. #2 had it, so I recognized it. Not an issue. Back to goats milk and things were back to normal. Expensive (we are talking $20 a week for goats milk for one kid) but normal.

Last week when I went shopping there was no goats milk. I had only a quart left. Soy milk mixed with goats milk turned into runs and a fussy baby not to long after drinking it, We then tried coconut milk (still can't locate goats milk) but she has had normal colored poop, but she has the runs still after 3 days. Is her belly just not ready for coconut milk? My pedi is of little help here. I think he is grasping at straws. I know a dietitian/nutritionist will know more. I have a child with eating issues and she was a LOT more help than the pedi.

Thoughts? I know, you are not doctors or specialists. At the same time, I also know that moms sometimes have more of a clue than their doctors on some things. Allergies and intolerance are one of them, especially when you have a kid with that issue.

Later today she will be back on goats milk. There is some in a town 30 minutes down the highway. So I am going to stock up a bit and later this week we have an appt at a kinda local place who has goats. If that goes well, we will be joining the milk share. So no more worries on why my store may randomly not have the milk I need. And it is cheaper. lol Not seeing the issue though. The insurance company that my dad works for insures the place. So I know they pass inspection without issues, no violations, and so on.

I am just curious about the coconut milk though.

Re: Issues with different types of milk

  • If she doesn't seem bothered by the coconut milk then she might be fine on that.  I don't think it's too early for it.  It's possible that the coconut milk isn't responsible for the upset stomach but the combination of all of the things you are trying.  Why don't you pull her off of all milk for a week and then try again with the coconut?

My DS is sensitive to cow's milk and soy milk was terrible for him.  However, a small amount of cow's milk doesn't bother him so I just limit him to 6 oz of milk each day and make sure he is eating yogurt, cheese, etc.

Our LO seemed intolerant to almost every milk. We had diarhea with WCM, lactaid, soy, hemp, and almond milk.  I didn't try coconut milk because I have a horrible intolerance to coconut milk myself and figured it wouldn't go well.  Coconut milk can act as a laxative for some people.
A lot of kids do well on hemp, though, mine seems to be the exception.
We have finally settled on Rice Milk and a medical formula for kids with allergies called Ultracare.  It is expensive but tastes good.  The other thing is that you only need one scoop to make eight ounces so it lasts a while.   You could also do Rice Milk (unsweetened and enriched with supplements) but you have to make sure to serve extra protein (eggs, meat,)  and good fats (olive oil and avocado.), since Rice Milk has very little protein or fat which the LOs need.

  • We use almond milk and haven't had any issues.  My son seemed to have an intolerance with cows milk and almond milk worked great.  So instead of tempt fate we moved DD right to almond milk after she turned a year and so far no issues.  I agree with other PP though...you really dont have to have it as part of their daily diet.  So if its causing major issues and stress then take it out but then make sure to provide enough protein, fat etc.

  • Have you tried looking for powdered goat's milk? I randomly found some in canisters at our Walmart in the baking aisle. That would let you stock up for situations when you can't get it regularly. Or even order online? Just a thought!

  • My kids are on the smaller side, so the extra fat they get from milk, any milk, is awesome. We do eat a varied source in meals. I actually also have a child with texture issues (34 lb 7 year old...) and another small child. So trust me, we do our best to sneak in any healthy fats and any other nutrients we can. She (the 2 days shy of being 1 year old) is just shy of 20lbs. Sadly she does not seem to be interested in protein much. I can get her to eat scrambled eggs, but not meat and she makes faces with beans. I have tried them all different ways. *shrugs* oh well, I will keep serving them and having her try them. I know she will eventually like something.

I feel bad not knowing about coconut milk. :-( At least I know now and she is on goats milk again.

    Thanks Ladies!

  • Just shy of 20lbs doesn't sound small to me.  Neither of mine were 20lbs at 12 mos.  Again, milk really isn't necessary so don't stress it.  I personally wouldn't pay that much for goats milk for my kids.

DS only eats meatballs and chicken if it's in a quesadilla for the most part.  He just started eating scrambled eggs a couple months ago after trying to get him to eat them for a year.  Does she eat yogurt, cottage cheese, string cheese?
  • She use to eat yogurt but has quit. She does not like cottage cheese no matter what I do to it. String cheese is a no go as well. I have tried various forms of meatballs, chicken, pork, beef, sausages... I have tried shredded (kid has 8 teeth) fine cut up, puree. I have even tried store bought baby food. She just doesn't have an interest in it yet. She will pick it out of quesadillas, sauces, muffins (yes, I make breakfasts muffins with tiny pieces of meat), ham and potatoes, the list can go on. She will sometimes eat the nitrate free lunch meat, but I don't view that as a great success. Good, but well, no. I'm not worried about that though. Several of the others were like that and now are great eaters.

I am willing to pay for the goats milk. It actually gave me a good excuse for SO to get the milk share I wanted anyway. I am out that way once a week for our CSA box. So another 15 minutes down the road from that won't be to bad.
