Crying while pooping

DD has always been VERY obvious when she goes #2 - she will go into a corner and stare off into space and grunt, etc.  She is occasionally constipated, usually for a day or two, in which case she will also turn red and sometimes cry when pooping.

Well, she is coming out of a constipation episode right now.  She is now back to pooping a few times a day, and it is relatively soft/a little sticky (DH says it's like cookie dough, LOL).  But she is SCREAMING crying while pooping and she won't let us touch her while it's happening.  The crying usually lasts maybe 1-2 minutes, then she is back to playing like nothing happened.

Anyone experienced similar?  I asked daycare what they thought.  They of course said it to ask our pediatrician (which we will), but they said it doesn't seem that out of the ordinary and they think it is a sign that she is ready for potty training (which I was going to start this month, we just bought her a potty).  But curious if anyone else has seen something like this  - and if so, what was going on?

Re: Crying while pooping

  • DS did this the first few times he pooped on the potty - would just cry and would want me to hug him while he went (yuck, lol). He now goes every morning on the potty with no issue, and actually waits for me to walk out before he goes and then says "Yay!" when he's done. I would be a little concerned with the crying while doing it in the diaper - maybe her first BM after being constipated was more solid and she is having a little bit of pain? If nothing seems red/sore though, it could definitely be her not liking pooping in her diaper! I'm not totally sure what the answer here is, but I would try putting her on the potty when she shows signs of pooping (DS actually stopped in the middle of going multiple times because I said potty and ran him in there, which is how he learned to wait to go ON the potty!). Good luck!

  • Thanks, @ambmama!  I just called the doctor and they are thinking she has internal hemorrhoids and told me to wait on potty training for a bit.  They may have us try a little Miralax until she heals.  But I do think she is ready for us to try potty training after we get her through this.

  • @katrine_05, yeah, she's kind of a little peanut (isn't your DD petite, too, if I remember?).  She is about 21-22 pounds now, overall in about the 20th percentile.  It's so weird for me because I was always the tall kid in the school photos, the tall awkward girl at dances, etc (I'm about 5' 10").  I think DD got DH's shorter stature!!

  • DS had a constipation episode a few months ago. He would cry/scream while having a BM, even after the constipation. When I looked closely at his rectum, he actually had a small fissure from the constipation. I just treated it for a few days with an antibiotic ointment and it resolved pretty quickly.

Poor little girl! I hope the MiaLax helps and she heals quickly.

  • @Mom2anAngel2 - ouch!  I have checked and can't really see any visible signs of a cut or anything, but it could be something like that, too.
