Pregnant after a Loss

Question about progesterone

It seems that many of you on here have had success with prometrium but when doing a google search it seems that most research points to low progesterone being a sign of miscarriage and supplementing does not actually "save" the pregnancy. thoughts?

Re: Question about progesterone

  • Yes and no. It depends on who you ask and what doctor you are talking to. My doctor said that it couldn't hurt, so why not? Personally, my only pregnancy that resulted in a live birth was heavily medicated with progesterone therapy and aspirin blood thinners. Coincidence or not, that is now the game plan for all of my future pregnancies.

it works like very mild blood thinner. I had a suspected clotting issue during loss #2 so we tried it for pregnancy #3. I did however, bleed a good bit more than expected at delivery due to taking it for so long.

  • Progesterone will not save an unhealthy pregnancy. It's not a merical drug. But having low progersterone does not automatically mean it's an unhealthy pregnancy. Progesterone is what supports a pregnancy until the placenta is formed and can take over (around 10-12 weeks). If your body is not making enough on it's own the pregnancy will most likly end in miscarriage, heathy or not, because there's simply not enough support. Progesterone supplements can help support a healthy pregnancy that might other wise end in miscarriage because of low progesterone.

I was on progersterone with DD and this pregnancy. I was not on it with my two losses. I have one kind of MTHFR that causes me to not be able to absorb folic acid properly or be able to produce enough progesterone on my own. With out supplements I wouldn't have my daughter or my little boy.

  • Like KJ said above, low progesterone can cause an otherwise healthy pregnancy to be lost in the first trimester, before the placenta takes over.

If you don't have a diagnosis of low progesterone (luteal phase deficiency) then taking the supplements will not help you at all.

If there is something anatomically or chromosomally wrong with the fetus all the progesterone will not "save it."

But if low progesterone is your problem then progesterone will help.

You need a doctor and not google. Progesterone is not without risk and side effects.
