Hi! Intro and first appointment ultrasound

Hi everyone!  This is my first pregnancy and I'm pretty clueless but glad there's a community of you all out there going through it with me.  My DH and I had never TTC and I got pregnant the first month, so it all happened pretty fast and I was completely shocked.  I have my first appointment on Oct. 16th- I'll be exactly 7 weeks.  My OB said they will do an ultrasound.  What should I expect?  Do they normally hear a heartbeat by 7 weeks- and if they don't hear one, is that a problem?

Re: Hi! Intro and first appointment ultrasound

  • Congrats and welcome! This is our first, too!

I think it's possible to see the heartbeat at 7 weeks, but I expect it's nothing to worry about if you don't see it that early. You can take it one step at a time though and if they don't see anything, ask if that's a concern.

ProTip: in your signature settings, there's an HTML button on the right side at the top of the box that has a page with <> in red. Click that before you copy your ticker code in. It took me embarrassingly long to figure this out...

  • They may be able to hear the heartbeat you never know but don't be too worried if they can't it's still early ;) also yes like @thepancakes‌ said they will be doing a transvaginal ultrasound so be prepared (lol).
  • Congrats!  If you are 7 weeks along you may be able to see a flicker that is the heartbeat.  I'll be going in on Oct 13, just shy of 7 weeks for me, can't wait!
  • Congrats and welcome.

J'15 January Signature Challenge: Pinterest Fail: I want to do one, but I was late in starting and now I'm too lazy to get in on it. This is how most of my pinterest fails normally occur, at least I didnt buy supplies.

My dr didn't even try to listen to the heartbeat until 12 weeks last time. I had an U/S (it was not transvaginal) at 9 weeks and got to see the little bean though :) good luck!
  • congrats and welcome! this is also my first pregnancy and i have no idea what to expect at my first appointment which is scheduled for 10/20 (which will be my 8 week mark). i was told there was a possibility of an ultrasound but that i should for sure be able to hear a heartbeat! :D i think this will all feel more real when i know there is a little heart beating!

  • Welcome and congrats! With my first pg, I had a trans-vaginal u/s at 6.5 weeks and was able to see the HB. I was a little surprised at first, but it was easy and only mildly uncomfortable.

  • Welcome and congrats!
I'll echo the others: at 7weeks, I'd expect a transvaginal ultrasound and chances are good that you will be able to see the heart beating. Good luck!
