Almost 18 weeks and blacking out

Im 17weeks and 5 days, been feeling quite consistant flutters for the past week but last night it was more noticable. Now this afternoon i was in conversation with the mother in law and i went all dizzy, blacked out and my ears were ringing.. She said the baby probably turned but im not sure! Can anyone else advise me? X

Re: Almost 18 weeks and blacking out

  • Hi there, did you eat anything substantial that day? Are you getting enough water? Sounds like a drop in blood pressure, which I have had, I saw squiggly lines in my vision and got very dizzy. I don't mean to concern you, but this would be something I would contact my doctor about, they want to be aware of this kind of thing. Never heard of baby turning over and making people pass out.

  • That has not happened to me, but I have heard that getting a little dizzy or faint and ringing in the ears are not uncommon while pregnant. Totally blacking out would scare me though - might want to check in with your dr.
  • It is not uncommon to pass out due to low blood pressure related to pregnancy. Some people are more prone to it than others (my mom would pass out with both me and my sister). However, I would still let your OB know, especially if it happens again. They might want to rule out other causes. In the meantime, keep well hydrated, eat well, and change positions slowly.

I was just going to post a similar thing and I am so glad I saw this. I am 17w6d and this morning I felt like I was going to vomit (first time the whole pregnancy) and when I sat down thinking it was going to happen, then I started to feel like I was going to pass out.

After reading the comments here, I called the DR office and they said they would get back to me by EOD, so when I find out I can post it here also.

I did read online it could all be from drop in blood pressure which is common around this time. It just really scared me because I am a worrier.

@kerryvaughan - did you end up talking to your Dr?

  • This happened to me and I had a feeling it was due to dehydration. The dr said it is very common and not to worry. He told me to drink plenty of fluids but also not just water. He said I need something with a little salt so that I retain the water too like Gatorade. He said to drink a whole one when I wake up everyday (since the blackout happened to me during my morning commute on the subway!). He said also have something like a salt bagel for the salt.

So far I'm following that advice and have been fine.

  • Dude we aren't doctors. Ask yours, that doesn't sound normal

I've never heard of a baby turning in utero would cause someone to black out. It sounds like your MIL doesn't know what she's talking about, hence why you should call your doctor.  BP is often lower during pregnancy and standing too quickly or not eating or drinking enough can exacerbate the faint/dizzy feeling.  I hope it doesn't happen again!
  • I had that happen while pregnant with my daughter around 14 weeks. I actually fainted at work and my boss caught me, thank god or my head would of hit the corned of a steel counter. I am 14 weeks with baby number two and it's happening again. It turned out to be low iron and I was anemic. I'm assuming I'm having the same thing now and am going to increase iron intake.
  • That sounds scary.
I would have called my dr first.....
  • I always heard if you faint then you need to be checked out immediately!! Call your doctor!
  • This has happened to me in both of my pregnancys and my doctor has told me it is normal. It has to do with low blood pressure or low iron sometimes. I just sit down as soon as I feel lightheaded to prevent acually blacking out.
  • Well I guess I jinxed myself with my earlier comment. This morning I was in the bathroom when I suddenly felt lightheaded, dizzy, and hot, like I was about to pass out. Grabbed some crackers and a glass of water and sat down, and felt normal within a couple of minutes. Just an empty stomach and maybe a little dehydrated over here.

If it happens to you again and food, water, cooling off or relaxing don't help, I would be concerned.
  • I would definitely recommend calling the DR. I called mine, so here is my update...she asked about my water in take. I drink about 16-20 servings of water a day, so she ruled out dehydration.

Then she asked about if I ate and what I ate when it happened. I had an egg, half a bagel and an apple - all balanced.

I did tell her I took my prenatal while eating my first few bites and she told me to wait and take it 20-30 minutes after I ate food so there was something in my stomach.

She said it could also be low blood sugar, but if it continued to call them again.

So if you are seeing this multiple times too - definitely raise a flag. Something definitely worth calling the doctor for.
