When to schedule infant photos?

Hi all! I was just considering making an appointment for infant photos soon since December will be a busy month for many photographers. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have never done this before, and I was wondering how in the world to schedule the photos if I don't know what day I will actually deliver. Do you schedule two appointments just to make sure the photographer is available? For example, if I'm due on December 9 (and I would love to have photos of LO within the first few weeks), should I ask to make an appointment close to that day and also maybe around the middle of the month just in case? I'm pretty sure my photographer will come to my house since she was also our wedding photographer so that is not a concern but I havent called her yet since scheduling a day has me perplexed. Or maybe I'm just overthinking this. TIA!
Married my best friend 7/2/11 - Furbaby born 7/9/11 and brought into our home 9/1/11

BFP#1:   2/2/13 ~ exact m/c date unknown but around 3/20 at 10 weeks ~ diagnosed with PMP ~ D&C on 4/5 ~ TTA for at least 1 year due to PMP ~ cleared to TTC 1/14

BFP#2:   2/7/14 ~ m/c 2/20/14 ~ possibly due to chemical pregnancy ~ TG no D&C is needed

Surprise BFP#3:  4/4/14 ~ super duper extra happy (and nervous) about this one - EDD 12/9/14!!!

John Joseph was born on 12/12/14 at 7 lbs. 11 oz.  He is the most beautiful rainbow baby we could have wished for!

  • Thanks @stephaniefine‌. I will definitely do that. Just wondering if anyone is in the know about how that works.

  • Check with your hospital as well. They often have photographers that come around and take pics. Then you can wait a few weeks and get the cuter "one month" pics with your photographer. (Seriously, newborns are usually all squished and alien looking. One month pics are almost always a whole lot cuter.)
  • My photographer also knows my due date and wants to do photos 10-14 days after birth. Usually they will ask you all of this info when you book them.
  • Thank you ladies! And also thank you for the tip @Eora3‌. I'm still debating on the timeframe so I will keep that in mind. :-)

  • My photographer specializes in newborn photos and closes her schedule after she books a certain number for the month. She essentially is on call until baby arrives and then the pics are taken within 2 weeks.
Our photographer is the same.  I would recommend calling ASAP as a lot book up months in advance.

Since you mentioned you were on the fence about newborn v. 1mo, I recommend browsing pinterest or elsewhere for newborn photos v. 1mo/2mo photos and see what you like best!

One month old babies are very hard to pose. I recommend doing them between 5 and 14 days. I did newborn photography before switching to weddings and 1 month olds are much more awake therefore making posing and working with them so difficult.

  • Most photographers do not enjoy working with older infants. I recommend trying your best to stay within the 2 week time frame

You should do a photoshoot during the first week if possible. They change so quickly after that!

I hope you have a tiara for the baby to wear while crowning!

GURL, I will be wearing the tiara. There can only be one queen.

  • I tell my clients to schedule for 1-2 weeks from the due date, but to confirm after the baby is born in case it needs to be moved. Every photographer seems to handle it differently so I would just check in with yours and see what they say.

  • With my first, I had the pics done like the day or two after I got home from the hospital. But my cousin who is a photographer also did professional pics in the hospital.

We're having labor/delivery photos done. There will be no crowning photos lol. I also think I want to set up a video camera and have her start it towards the end. I want to capture DH announcing baby's sex. I'll just edit out all the screaming before hand ;)

  • Ok so my hospital has a newborn photographer walk around and take photos.  Here's my question - I want to have a picture of the baby in a little santa outfit, can I bring that with me?  Or is that stupid?
