Weekly GD Check-In! 09/30/14

This weekly check-in is for anyone with Gestational Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, or other blood sugar issues during pregnancy.  If this is your first time posting, please let us know with a short intro.

New to GD?   Check here for a quick reference guide.  https://community.babycenter.com/post/a46582366/new_to_gd_quick_reference

Check In:   How is the diet going?  Any challenges that we can help out with?  Any new recipes/ successes that you want to share?  Rant/Vent about the lack of chocolate?

QoTW:       With all the talk about pumpkin spice flavored foods, are you working them into the diet or avoiding?

I have had a great time with our weekly check-in.  If Schroeder does not arrive by next Tuesday, I will be induced.  So, I would appreciate it if someone else could take over for the month of October.

Re: Weekly GD Check-In! 09/30/14

  • Lowest fasting so far this morning - 75.  But yesterday was 99, so the docs are still keeping an eye on the fasting levels (post meal levels aren't a problem if  I stay on the diet).

DH is working late tonight so I have to remind myself to be good at dinner tonight.  Normally his late work nights are a reason to order pizza or get some Mexican food.  Alas.

QoTW:  We picked up some pumpkin spice oreos a few days ago.  I took 3 out for a snack and DH took the rest over to a friend's house.  I love pumpkin spice but DH isn't a big fan, so we normally avoid them.

  • My fasting numbers are pretty much always in the 70s or 80s, but I've been really struggling to keep my post meal numbers down. Hard to get them below the 130s (and nurse wants them no higher than 105!). I just don't know what to eat for carbs. She said lay off the rice this week..okay, so do I have one piece of chicken and 4 and a half cups of cooked broccoli? Frustrated. Anyway, I'm hoping to be induced this week but concerned that my failures will negatively impact the baby's blood sugar :(

  • Oh! And Pumpkin Spice...I'm DYING for a D n D pumpkin spice coffee but will refrain until LO is here. But that is one of the things dh is going out to get me once she is here :)

  • My fastings and post-meal numbers have been fine, so I've been encouraged to add more carbs to every meal, so I've been eating relatively normal breakfast, lunches & snacks, but I keep dinners low in carbs because I find it's the only meal I tend to be around 100 after, though last night I was 76 after eating whole wheat pasta, so I don't know what is happening there.

Yesterday I completely forgot about the GD and had an iced pumpkin coffee, half a pumpkin doughnut and almost an entire apple cobbler muffin, all before noon.  My numbers were fine, and stayed fine even post lunch, but I do feel guilty, even though I'm not "supposed to" since my body is able to handle the glucose and keep my blood sugar at normal levels.  I just want LO out!!!

I've been indulging in tons of pumpkin items since my numbers have been low - pumpkin bread, muffins, coffee, etc.....  I do have the pumpkin spice oreos in the cabinet, but I wont' be opening those until LO arrives.  I have a feeling I'm going to think they're too sweet so I'm not in a rush to open them.  My MFM laughed at me when I told him that I can eat things like pumpkin muffins and my levels remain in the 80s - he asked why anyone would want to eat a pumpkin muffin in the first place. ;)

  • So, has anyone been given advise on what to eat before being induced? The OB today forgot that I have GD and told me to essentially carb load.

So my ob said I didn't have to check my levels anymore! So while I have tried to maintain a good diet for breastfeeding I have had some glorious treats once I left the hospitol (they had me on the diabetic diet post delivery). My levels were within range while there but I had to start pricking my own finger because they were brutal.

Baby Bryan was born with low blood sugar so I did have to supplement with formula to get his levels up. It took about 6 hours and then he was cleared.

I plan to start checking my levels twice a day next week once things calm down and we settle into a more steady routine.

Well, labor is kinda like a marathon, so I'd actually load up on protein to keep your energy up. I used to eat pasta the night before a race, but it was over in 3 miles. :-/

Although, if you weren't being induced and went into labor on your own, should we be eating differently than we already are? So many questions!
If I go into labor naturally, the plan is to stay at home until much closer so I could eat as I felt up to it (mainly soft foods - scrambled eggs, yogurt, etc).  However, with an induction, the OB said that they won't let me eat once I arrive at the hospital (we will be sneaking in some yogurt and other soft foods, though).

  • I'm being induced today and dr didn't mention what, if anything, to eat. Hmmm, should've asked. Well, I've been eating light and trying not to overdo the carbs.
