Trouble TTC

Newbie - IUI and 2 week wait.

I've avoided posting anything on here because it all seems so daunting.  If I break any of the rules I apologize!

My husband I have been TTC for about 2 years.  We did 6 months of clomid and I responded to it but still no baby.  We went to a specialist and did clomid, then gonal f, then ovadril and progesterone.  After that failed cycle we had to wait a month because the follicles that seemed so promising before, hadn't gone away so my body wouldn't have responded to the meds.

In that month we had 3 pregnancy announcements, 2 from friends, and from my sister in law.  Needless to say I was devastated.

This month we did clomid, gonal f, with estrogen added, and then ovadril and progesterone.  We also did IUI yesterday.  I feel like I am so much more aware of my body functioning now so I start over analyzing every little thing.

The progesterone is making me nauseated, dizzy, and light headed so I keep psyching myself out that I'm pregnant.  Even though I KNOW it's way too early to tell.  I just don't know how I'm going to get through this 2 week wait.  And it doesn't help that our 2WW is up while we're on vacation with my husbands family.

It's all very overwhelming and frustrating.

Re: Newbie - IUI and 2 week wait.

  • Omg I totally feel ya about the progesterone symptoms.. And not just that, but I keep secretly thinking I'm KU because of little twinges I may (or may not) have been having.

    Welcome and FX!!!!!!!!!

    Welcome to the board.

I'm not an expert by any means, but from reading your post, it seems like you've done 8 cycles of clomid at this point. I'm pretty sure most doctors don't recommend doing more than 6. That might be something you want to mention to your doctor. When you say that you're going to a specialist, does that mean that you're seeing a RE (reproductive endocrinologist)?

  • I think the nurse said this last cycle was the last time they were going to do the clomid because it's messing with the lining, which is why the gave me estrogen this time.  The warning label on the bottle says not to take while pregnant or planning to become pregnant so that's a little weird.  But the nurse said to keep taking it and I'm assuming they know what they're doing with that.

We are seeing an RE (thanks for spelling that out because I had seen it several places but didn't know what it meant), although admittedly we've seen the nurse way more than the Dr.   Our RE specializes in PCOS which is what they diagnosed me with months ago.  (Everything starts to run together after awhile).
  • Welcome! I'm pretty new to TB also. And I totally hear you on all the little things you are experiencing with the progesterone. My poor hubby last month certainly got an earful the last 2WW with all my symptoms I was feeling. It definitely is a mind game and I think I went a little crazy last month but I'm just in the beginning days of my 2nd iui 2WW and so far I've been ignoring all the twinges and feelings I think I'm having(way to early to tell). I'm sure at the end of this 2WW I'll convince myself that I am pregnant and then that I'm not and that I'm just crazy about a thousand times. GL!
  • Welcome to 3T! Glad you decided to intro...this board is a blessing!

Progesterone side effects are a real mind fluck...sorry you're dealing with that. I've done WELL over 6 cycles with clomid and my RE is fine with it because I respond well and my lining is thick. If your having lining issues, I'm glad to hear you'd be switching it up next cycle. I know lots of PCOS girls here have better results with femara. Hopefully this IUI works and there won't be a next time! GL!!

  • Progesterone is a dirty b*tch, for real. I'm in the 2WW of my 2nd IUI, and it's so much better this time around. But last month I swear every hour I had a new twinge to over analyze. Best of luck to you! And try not to think about it too much (ha! Easier said than done, I know). It made me feel a lot better to use HPTs throughout the 2WW, just so I have an idea of what is going on and I'm not blindsided by a BFN on test day. Oh and it looks like we have pretty much the same protocol :)

  • I used to over-analyze every single twinge but I'm really trying not to now that I'm doing medicated cycles. I think the trigger shot gives me cramps and then I attribute everything else to the prometrium - those are the exact same hormones I would be dealing with if I were pregnant so of COURSE they make me feel pregnant. The prometrium also delays my period so I can't even look for spotting/pms cramps which used to always be a very reliable indicator of a BFN for me. I know it's way easier said than done but I'd try to ignore your body for a little while... at 1dpiui there's physically no way you'd be feeling anything that was actually pregnancy related so you know for sure it's the medications.

My husband was diagnosed with state IV colon cancer in 2009. Surgery and six rounds of chemo left him in remission (yay!) but with low testosterone. He took Androgel for two years starting in Jan 2011.

    -varicocelectomy in June 2013
-SA in Dec 2013: 23mil/ml, really low morph

  • Welcome to the board. I am pretty new here too, and having the same issue with the progesterone..which I actually posted about yesterday! It's totally frustrating that it gives you all the pregnancy-like symptoms and messes with your head that way. I am counting down the hours to my pregnancy test on Saturday...it's been a loooong 2WW! I can only imagine what it's been like for you being with your in-laws all this time. Hang in there, you can get through it!

I also totally hear you about all the pregnancy announcements. 2 of my best friends recently had babies, and another is about to have her second baby in 3 years. Doesn't seem fair right? I just try to focus on the joy that those other babies can bring to my life...even if they're not my own. At least we can buy cute little outfits for someone right?
  • Welcome! Sorry you have to be here, but I'm glad you're in good hands. Hopefully this IUI will be the one!

Isn't it weird about the drug warnings? Our RE explained that both Clomid and Femara are harmful to a fetus, but when taken as scheduled for ovarian stimulation, they will be out of the system before it could be harmful. But that's also why we need a definite BFN before starting the next cycle.

  • Thanks everyone! It's nice to have support and know that other people are dealing with the same thing.  I'm about to go insane with the side effects of the progesterone.  I don't remember it being so bad last time!
