Music and/or Playlist for Labor?

Hey y'all. In my childbirth class, we were told that music can often be comforting and encouraging during labor and that we can bring in music to the hospital. Are any of you doing this and what's on your playlist? I need some ideas. :)

Re: Music and/or Playlist for Labor?

  • I did one for my son but didn't want any sort of music when I went into labor, just quiet. I did a mix of high energy and mellow music for my list though.

  • I jammed to the likes of Salt 'n pepa and vanilla ice until transition. Probably the same this time.

  • I know it sounds crazy cheesy, but nithing soothes me like Celtic flute music lol
  • Until transition, I'll be jammin to my favorite guilty pleasures on my iPod.  I already warned DH that there will most likely be some Britney mixed in with my favorite hippie jam bands going on in the room.  I'm all about music and it makes me happy and relaxed, so I'll probably need it.

  • My husband just plans on having Pandora ready for me if I want music.

  • I also just wanted quiet last time. I think we turned the TV on to some movie on TNT or whatever for a bit, but I didn't want music. We will both have our IPhones and IPads handy if I change my mind this time.

  • I think I'm going to go with the instrumental yoga meditation type music too, I've done yoga for years so that's what I'm using to relaxing/breathing/meditating to and am hoping it'll come easier if I'm in the zone.  I'll also have my phone with all of my favorite pandora stations if I need a change!

This. I'll have my iPad there in case I feel differently this time.

  • Honestly nothing.  I prefer it to be as quiet as possible while in the transition phase of labor (the hardest part).  There is so much going on at that point that the music  would just annoy me.  Afterwards delivery it was nice to have my iPod with all my music so I could pick and choose.  I'm not planning any music when laboring but I'll probably watch a movie or two at home like I did with Peanut.
  • I imagine myself bringing ear plugs. I can get a little ragey and distracted with background noise.
On the flip side, Pandora and ESPN will be queued up ;)
  • For DS, I did a mix of fast songs that were the type I would want to run to, and then I did a more mellow mix of slow, sappy songs. I wanted both depending upon my mood. In the end, the last thing that was on my mind when I got to the hospital was music.  I never pulled out my ipod.

  • No plans to create any type of list. If I want music I'll put on Pandora or Spotify. That way I can change it up depending on my mood!

  • For those of you that listened to music, did you use headphones?

  • I'll have my phone but don't plan on making a playlist or anything. I prefer to watch tv or talk to family members. The only thing I plan on listening to is a hockey game, provided they're playing while I'm in the hospital.

  • I've got a playlist with some higher energy stuff in the beginning for when I want to be up and moving around, and then a meditation/drum CD, a celtic harp CD, and a nature sounds/Tibetan singing bowls CD.  So I have a lot of options depending on my mood.  I was able to meditate with the drum CD last night and it helped me get really super focused on my breathing, which seems like it could be helpful during labor.

  • I made two playlists for my last labor...

Most of this labor play list has uplifting and calming gospel music

Most of this playlist has upbeat and empowering lyrics music:

The gospel one really helped when I started having the really painful contractions!!

  • I really like the idea of an upbeat playlist for the beginning and calmer music for later!

  • I don't like the quiet normally so I think I'll want music as a distraction from the contractions.  In a perfect world, I'll be laboring on a Sunday so I can have the football games on, but just in case I think I'll have 2 lists as well, one more mellow and one more upbeat.  I need to find a decent cheap portable speaker (my hospital recommend this if you want music).

    Our first!!!

  • I plan on making a few different playlists on my ipod and having it, speakers, and headphones with us, but I'm not really sure if I'll end up wanting it at all.  I'll probably make one that is soft, mellow stuff and one that is more of my favorite songs and bands.

DH joked that he wanted Push It and Baby Got Back on the list.
