What to give church for Baptism??

So we have our son's baptism next weekend and I have no experience with this stuff.  We don't go to the church we are having him baptised in (we don't go anywhere) but we know the pastor due to him marrying my sister-in-law and her kid's baptisms were all there.  He was also on my Relay for Life team a few years ago and just seems like a really nice guy.  I was a little nervous asking him to do it since we don't attend his church, but he was so nice and said he would be honored to do it.  So I think I need to give the church something, but what?  I'm sure they would most likely want money.  But how much??  I know it's all relative to where you live, etc, but can someone give me an idea??

Thanks!!!

  • Ok, thanks ladies!  I am in the Chicago suburbs was kind of thinking around $100 and was hoping I wasn't way off.
  • Money. Churches always want money. I'd say whatever you're comfortable with between $100-$300.

  • We gave our Church nothing for the Baptism. But we're also members and give pretty regularly....
  • Our church had a 'suggested donation' of $50.

  • We just baptized our son today!! We gave $50 since it was suggested. You can also give something to the deacon or priest performing the baptism.

  • We also gave 50 for the baptism. We are members of the church as well and no amount was suggested.

I know I go to a very traditional church but I cannot imagine this being normal.

  • @danabsd‌ I don't know if it's a normal thing, we were told if we wanted to we could - when we got married we gave something to the alter boys who served - we didn't give anything to the deacon who performed it but we could have just as a generosity.

In my world (old school Catholic churches) it's fairly common to give the priest a cash gift for weddings and baptisms. This is separate from the church donation. After my wedding my dad was so pleased with our priest that he gave him an extra $100, on top of what my husband and I gave.

Funny story - my BIL and SIL were married by the Polish priest at the church down the street. My SIL (who is not Polish) had trouble getting a hold of the priest before the wedding. So her dad told her "Have BIL call and leave a message in Polish. Father T. will think you're calling to bless the house, he'll call back so he can get the $100".  And she did, and the priest called right back.

Yes, this is the world I live in.
