This is my great grandmother's name but I never thought too much about it until we met a nice woman the other day named Gladys. I've been thinking about it lately and today my OH suggested that we add it to the list. What say you? TIA!

Re: Gladys

  • I like it. It would definitely be unique to her. I've never met anyone named Gladys and I think it's due for a comeback.

I say go for it. I think it's pretty. It does remind me of an old lady but when I put my personal experience aside I can appreciate that it sounds pretty and looks pretty.

I love old lady names...but this is not one of them.

I would middle name it, if used.

  • SS- It's my grandmother's name. We're very close, but the funny thing is that she really doesn't like the name Gladys herself. So, we're using Claudia, which is the Latin form for Gladys, for a girl. I know a lot of people prefer that the original name is used to honor someone, but since she doesn't like it either, I think it's a good compromise.

  • I really wish I liked Gladys since both of my grandmothers have that name, but I just don't. I like old lady names for the most part, but I'm not sure that one is ready for a comeback just yet.

  • No - middle name only.

Usually I would be saying use the original Welsh name it comes from but that is actually worse - Gwladys. One of those names that should be relegated to the ether of early Welsh stories and saints and the name of roads and schools, not on an actual living human being

  • I like it. I have an aunt Gladys. I can't help thinking floral when I hear it even though I know glads is short for gladiolus (please don't use that!), maybe because her sister is Iris. I think Gladys is a very feminine name, also vintage but not currently trendy which is great (I was one of 3 Meghan's in very class for forever). Probably ahead of the trend with Gladys
