Fish for Baby

How often do you feed your baby fish?  What kind of fish does he/she like and how do you prepare it?

Salmon was my go-to for DS but he went off it and I'm looking for alternatives.  A dietitian I met said twice a week is important for development.  What have you heard?

Re: Fish for Baby

  • Never! DH and I hate fish so it's not something we'd ever prepare.

lol @krose0713 I can almost hear you recoiling in disgust as I read your post!
  • We don't eat fish very often I've let DD try salmon, tuna, and haddock. Haddock was all she liked.

I though you were going to say something about getting your LO a pet fish. :D

I haven't heard any recommendations for fish.

We don't have it often but I usually make tilapia or cod. We like any firm white fish. I sprinkle old Bay seasoning and thin slices of lemon on top and bake in the oven until done.

For my 4 yr old I call all fish, fish sticks. He has had them since he was young so it's easier than describing each new dish :)

Haha, you are correct. I shudder at the thought of eating it.

  • We eat it about 2x per month and dd enjoys it all, cod, salmon, etc.

  • I am hoping the allergist clears fish. We haven't tried it yet. But it will be nice to have more food choices.

I thought this was going to be about getting your baby a pet fish. And the first question was really confusing. I was like, ask a pet store.

I don't eat fish unless we are out to eat and honestly that is rare and normally at places where we don't have LO (ie fancy). He's had it a few times at day care but no clue if he actually ate it.

@iamjojo‌ I just reread my question and laughed so hard!

    Thanks ladies!
  • I was really confused, too! I thought you were buying "baby fish" for LO and didn't know what to feed them, then went on to ask how to prepare it. I couldn't believe you'd eat a pet fish!

But, back to your actual question... We eat fish very rarely, maybe once every month or two, and usually salmon. I would like to incorporate it more frequently. LO has had it cooked in foil on the grill and thought it was ok.

Haha I thought the same thing! Usually once a week we have cod, haddock or salmon. She loves fish!!

  • I hate fish, but I really want to try and not pass that on to DS.  We just got cleared to give him fish, and so far I've just tried to give him some once a week.  I have started with canned/pouched tuna and salmon since I don't have to smell or prepare it too much then.  I mix it with yogurt/avocado to make a tuna salad, or put it in pasta.  I want to try and bake maybe tilapia or something soon.

  • I'm Greek so fish is a big part of our diet even though i hardly cook it as much as my mom makes it back home. Baby girl has had baked salmon, grilled tilapia/cod/flounder and shrimp. I usually run the pieces in my hands to make sure there are no leftover bones before i give it to her but so far she's liked it a lot. This link here has some good recipes if you want to check it out.
  • She eats fish when we do. We like salmon and tilapia. I also eat tuna, but DH doesn't. She likes all the fish we've had. We don't have it on any schedule, so I'm not sure how often we eat it.
