Milk Allergy WCM Substitute

Hey Ladies,

I pretty much haven't posted since my son was born. Life with 2 under 2 has been crazy hectic and I gave up TB for time with my husband and sleep. That said, I am wondering if anyone else's child is allergic to cow milk protein and what they're planning to substitute for WCM? There is so many options out there and comparing the carton labels has left me confused. Our pedi said 4% fat was the same as WCM but the label for WCM says its 12% fat (25% saturated) *scratching my head now* So we thought coconut milk would be the best substitute as the label stated it was 8% fat (25% saturated). However, coconut milk gave LO diarrhea. *sigh* Now I have no clue what is best since we want to avoid soy.

Any thoughts/suggestions/nutrition knowledge is appreciated. TIA

Just wanted to add that almond milk and rice milk have 4% fat (0% saturated). Based on labels it just feels like those are not adequate WCM replacements. Thoughts?

Re: Milk Allergy WCM Substitute

  • Does your son have an actual allergy or just an intolerance? Have you tried to see if he has grown out of it yet?  MPI is super common, but from what I gather, most babies grow out of it by 1sh. DD was diagnosed MPI when she was a few weeks old so we gave her Nutramigen once my boobs kicked. At her nine month checkup, the doctor gave us the go-ahead to test her with regular, milk-based formula to see if she has outgrown the intolerance. It appears that she has.

If it's an intolerance that he hasn't grown out of, could he have Lactaid? Nutramigen and Alimentum are not completely dairy free, they are just more broken down, similar to Lactaid, (I think that's how Lactaid works, but I could be wrong).

If nothing else, I'm sure almond or rice milk are fine as long as you make sure he is getting adequate fat/protein from other sources.

  • yes, dd was CMI, so we used almond milk. pedi suggested we mix olive oil with it, bc of the low fat content in the milk. it doesn't mix well, so you have to shake it and hope he drinks fast. otherwise, just encourage him to shake the sippy as he's drinking. also, put fat in everything..i'd dip her food in olive oil, too, that you don't normally dip in anything...i.e. chicken, veggies, etc...i just pretended it was ketchup and would dip for her.

    good luck!

dd didn't like soy milk, she literally tossed the cup at me several times...and i couldn't find organic/all natural coconut milk, which is why we chose almond.

  • If you are BFing and want to continue BFing, BM is a very good WCM substitute. DD1 didn't get WCM until about 16 months when she slept 12 hours and my supply tanked. And even then she nursed 4x/day and drank only about 4oz WCM a day.
i love @crunchymama11, but i want to nitpick at her sentence. BM is not a good substitute for WCM........WCM is a good substitute for BM. parents switch their babies to WCM because they no longer wish to BF (whether it be personal reasons or supply reasons). if you had the easy-choice of BM or WCM, choose BM...but if you don't, then choose alternative milks, whichever form.

First of all, THANK YOU for posting about coconut milk! I actually just asked that on another spot. My current littlest one has issues with cows milk. We moved her to goats milk and have had no issues. #2 had the same problem and he outgrew it after a year or two.

Recently I could not find any goats milk in either of the 2 stores that carry it and we moved to coconut milk but my daughter has the runs. Not the same yellow as with cows milk, it is normal colored, but IDK what the deal was. It was normal. You just verified that that might be normal.

We are actually switching to a goats milk share in the next week once I inspect the place. It is mandatory for new people joining. I already have the low down though since the company my dad works for insures the place.

  • We have tried soy milk (no dice, it made her angry), fortified rice milk (will drink it, but not happy about it), and coconut milk (liked, but runny poop and we are trying to #2-potty train). I will try the hemp milk and goats milk next.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I need to read up on where to buy goats milk around here. I've heard there could be some cross-reactivity with it so I haven't looked into it but I will now. Also, he is actually allergic not just intolerance. I had him tested at 7 months old when my milk supply started tanking and he was issues with regular formula. We have not had him retested because he breaks out every `time he has any something with milk in it, so I know he's still allergic.

  • Can you tell me more about this test? My son was diagnosed with MSPI at 5 months based on his symptoms, but the pedi told us there was no test. I'm also trying to figure out what to give him instead of WCM as he still seems to have a reaction everytime we try to reintroduce dairy. The suggestions so far have been helpful.
  • It was just a RAST test (blood test). They tested him for 4 common food allergies in kids (milk, soy, eggs and something else). He was fine with everything else. Just allergic to milk.

  • We use organic oat milk and add healthy fats (avocado, seeds/nuts, olive oil) to everything else for all three kids. DS is still BF too though. I wish we like hemp milk but it is nasty! We use concur for some things.
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image
