Breast feeding ?

I'm really set on breast feeding my child, but my dr insists it would be bad for the baby because I'm (in his words) "too young" and I have low iron. This is the same dr who told me my low iron would affect the baby's iq, which my midwife has now confirmed is a big fat lie and apparently "the most ridiculous thing" she's ever heard. I have heard of older women having problems breast feeding but never younger women and my mom breast fed all 3 of her children which is why I'm rather adamant on doing it.
So my question is do you guys think it's a bad idea and could harm my baby or is my dr feeding me more crap when he really doesn't know the first thing about baby's?

  • I breast fed at 17 and my daughter is now a happy healthy 3 year old. Are you taking supplements to help with low iron? I had low iron as well and it didn't hurt me while I nursed. I'd be finding a new doctor personally.
  • Time for a new doctor
  • That's crap. Find a new doctor.

  • To echo pp - ridiculous - creepy doc!! And besides - if you are old enough to use this message board you likely aren't too young to, physically, breastfeed a baby.

  • New doctor time for sure, and I'd even consider reporting this one.  Their advice is both ridiculous and goes against WHO recommendations.  I have a friend who is the most anemic person I've ever met and she was able to breastfeed all three of her children.  She had to supplement iron when they got a little older, but I had to do that, too.  It's not uncommon.

  • Run, run, and keep on running. Find a new Dr immediately.
  • New Doctor ASAP!! Seriously. Don't brush this off. Breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your child. Even if you do have low iron, you can take supplements. duh. I did.

I think the only time a doctor would recommend you not breastfeed is if you have some serious vices. like heroine. or if you're a constant drunk. or anything else like that.... but just because of an iron deficiency that you can take supplements for? WTF? Leave him ASAP...

Also, I highly recommend you read up on Kellymom.com. Breastfeeding 101.

  • I would seriously consider switching doctors. Most doctors aren't actually that well educated about breast feeding. Can your body absorb iron? Can you take supplements? I call BS on this doc.

    Exactly!

  • Get a new doctor.

    Seriously.

    What the fuck?
  • I would find a new doctor and quick!!!
  • In her defense a lot of doctors here are pro supplementing when baby isnt "gaining properly" (they say this to everyone regardless if there is problem or not) i am so thankful my dr just told me to keep doing my thing and ebfing i had a chunky monkey by six months :) so anyone can do it! It just takes a lot of drive and to be honest it made me more confident because I had to feed that baby where ever when ever and all her rolls were because of me :)

  • I had anemia last pregnancy and took iron supplements until I was done BF'ing. My doctors never mentioned anything about not BF'ing and actually encouraged it. At the risk of beating a dear horse, get a new doctor.

  • I agree with pp's. Run, do not walk, to a better doctor.

Breastfeeding is great for babies. Most women prefer to breastfeed if they are physically able to. Many women can't, and it can be heartbreaking and painful. But regardless of whether your body will cooperate or not, you should definitely try! Especially since it's what YOU want to do for YOUR little one.

I'm anemic, with an iron deficiency, and was never once told that would be a potential issue when breastfeeding. The baby will get what they need from you, the worst that could happen is YOU aren't getting quite enough iron for yourself, in which case that's (usually) easily solved by taking a supplement, which is what I do.

Definitely get a new doctor, that one is a freakin' idiot, and a total douchecanoe at that!

Oh and wanted to add I had NO issues breastfeeding my daughter, and still nurse her a few times a day and she's 13 months old. Just a little aside, her iron was recently checked and was great.

  • Ok first of all, i am so glad you're questioning this quack... Ahem... Doctor. The only time I've heard breastfeeding not being recommended is for hiv positive moms.

I would recommend that you keep your iron up during pregnancy with supplements. Iron is important for baby's brain growth and it will be important in breast milk as well but there are supplements for baby if your iron is low while nursing as well.

Breastfeeding can be difficult no matter what age you are but its sometimes harder when you're young to find help and support so I really encourage you to seek that out as early as possible- and clearly your doctor is not going to be a good source of support. Wic programs usually can refer you to a breastfeeding counselor who doesn't cost money like a lactation counselor (even if you don't have wic). There are usually breastfeeding moms groups that meet up monthly or weekly and peer support can make a world of difference.

  • PPs have said it plently, but to drive the point home...

    Get a new doctor!!

Also take a look to see if your hospital offers any breast feeding classes, that would be the perfect place for you to find correct answers.
  • Holy shit. New doctor needed, stat. That's completely absurd. I'm low iron anemic and my OB told me that breast feeding is good regardless. If your doctor states you're "too young" and your iron is too low...why the hell wouldn't they recommend you go on a supplement? Sounds like a quack.

  • I would switch doctors ASAP!  If he is already giving this horrible advice it is hard to tell what he will say as the pregnancy progresses and once your labor starts.  I can't believe a doctor would say this?!  It is disgusting!

As far as nursing your child goes...go for it!  It is the healthiest way to feed him/her.  Being too young is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.  I'm a teacher and one of my 16 year old students got pregnant and is STILL nursing her one year old daughter.  If you have low iron, iron supplements will work wonders as well.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this, but please do yourself a favor and switch now or you may regret what is about to possibly come.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • I'm really glad you also have a midwife there giving you accurate information! Sounds to me like your doc is either misinformed or judgmental of your age, neither of which are traits I'd want in the delivery room with me.
  • Your doctor is an idiot. Just leave and don't look back.
  • Im pretty young as well and have a consistent low iron level and my doctor is super adamant about me breastfeeding, partly due to the medicine I take and partly cuz is the best thing for the baby. He knows about my iron problems and has never once mentioned that having anything thing to do with breast feeding. That's weird

  • I'm not anemic at all, I just don't absorb enough iron from what I eat. I take supplements, but his argument was that it would take at least 6 months to build my iron back up and if would be breast feeding before then

Not true.  Some have their own practices and don't require you to see an OB unless you get transferred for high risk reasons.

Interesting. My MD wanted me to find an OB when I told her we'd be trying to get pregnant on the near future. I just figured that was the norm!

  • It shouldn't matter how old you are if you can breastfeed or not. Id switch drs. He must not know the first thing about anything. Id call the lactation specialist about the iron tho. They may be able to give you a supplement when the baby is born that is safe to use while breastfeeding.
