Newborn won't nurse at night

So my little girl is 13 days old, over the past few nights we have run into the problem of she won't nurse at night. She wakes up and shows signs that she is hungry, she latches on and sucks maybe 3 or 4 times and then falls asleep. And nothing I do wakes her. I have tired things like changing her diaper, nursing with the light on and talking to her/tickling her. I even woke my husband up last night to show him what is happening.

But when I put her down she instantly cries and wants to nurse more and it starts all over again. Making night feedings last a hour if not more.

Anyone have any experience with this or any advise?

  • Have you tried making her cold (stripping her down to just the diaper).  That sometimes can help keep them awake.

  • I'm having a similar issue! My little boy is 16 days old and he just started doing that - he is fussy during feedings and when I calm him down he just falls asleep (but when i unlatch him he wakes up and starts rooting) it has helped somewhat for me to keep him in an upright position facing me. He had more trouble sleeping that way. It's hard during the night but I wake my husband up and make him hold the baby while I do breast compressions to fill him up as much as I can before he passed out again. Of course this causes my milk to come out too fast sometimes so he swallows air or coughs. It's frustrating but I'm hoping it's just a stage. As soon as the sun comes up he's a perfect angel again and latches perfectly - Im pretty sure he's just messing with me and secretly thinks it's all hilarious...lol - if I come up with any solutions I'll pass them on!
  • All of the above is good advice. My pediatrician told me to change the diaper or undress my little guy if I was having a hard time getting him to wake up to eat. At that age I usually changed his diaper and then nursed him. He would always nurse to sleep and then I didn't risk waking him to change him after he fell back to sleep.
