Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler Bed Question

My second loves climbing up and snuggling in his brother's toddler bed.  We have a third baby on the way, and I'm torn wether to move him to a toddler bed or keep him a crib (we have a second crib available, so there's no need to rush him out).  It is easier when super pregnant to put them in a toddler bed, but I also like the idea of him being contained.  We switched our oldest at 19 months, but #2 is almost 13 months, and I'm not really sure when is too early to make the switch.  Thoughts?

Re: Toddler Bed Question

  • I'm team keep them confined as long as possible.  DD stayed in her crib till she was 3 and DS is fine in his at 2.  DS loves to be in DD's bed with her but that's not quite the same as reliably staying in his own bed all night and at naps.

Me too.  DD will be in hers until we need it for another LO, which won't be until after she's 2.5 years old.  Unless she becomes an escape artist before then.
  • Another person in the keep them confined as long as possible camp.  If he's sleeping well, I wouldn't want to rock the boat (if unnecessary) and mess with his sleep especially while I was pregnant.
  • Thanks Ladies!  I hadn't seen interest in the bed with my first this early, so it was making me reconsider keeping the second contained.  I'll probably try to stay sane, keep with the crib :)
  • We just moved our LO a week ago and shes 13 months to a big bed (double) and she loves it! She falls asleep much faster now. She didnt really show interest in a big bed but we just thought we would give it a try and its the best thing we ever did.
  • DD is 18 months and is getting her own twin for Christmas. We currently cosleep as she's never done well in a crib.
  • We moved DS at 14 months to a toddler bed when DD was on the way. He loved it. Before the official switch we first laid his mattress in the spot where the bed was going to go, and he thought that was hilarious. Then we had the bed in the room for a couple weeks before he started sleeping in it. We wanted him to get used to it, be able to climb around & check it out, etc. When he started sleeping in it he did great. We had to get a bedrail specifically sized for toddler beds, the built-in rail that was part of the bed frame didn't go down nearly far enough and he moves around a ton in his sleep. We also taught him pretty early on how to safely climb out of bed so that he wasn't tempted to climb over the bed rail or over the footboard & wind up hurting himself.
Before making the switch, we asked our pediatrician for advice, and she said as long as he was walking well independently she didn't think it would be a problem. She felt that kids did fine switching when they were that young, as long as they seemed ready and interetsed.
