Really Dumb Question

The only bonus is that it is NOT a medical question.

When are you ladies taking stuff out of the box?  I mean, should I pull the pack n play/swing/rocker/whatever out of the box and set it up today?  Tomorrow?  When I am ready to put the kid in it?  I am only asking cause I have a baby shower today and was just planning on fill the nursery up with boxes and dealing with it later, but my family is making me think there is something wrong with me.  As in, I should be "nesting" or "preparing" more.

Re: Really Dumb Question

  • I think in probably just going to leave things in boxes until they are needed!! All though my family also thinks I'm crazy
I am so glad that I am not the only one.

  • I set things up before hand. Didn't want to have to bother to put something together once LO arrived. Plus I enjoyed figuring out where I wanted things placed and when it was in boxes it was hard to get a feel for if it would work where I wanted it.

I set up most of my stuff in the summer, but that was mainly because I was off work and needed something to do. Now that I'm back at work I feel "safe" to just amass the rest of the crap I buy/receive because I have a crib, changing station, etc. set up so even if baby makes an early appearance, I'm ready.

That said, everyone's looked at me like I'm crazy when they ask if I've started the nursery and I say it's mostly finished.
That is funny.  DH is asked about 12x a day when he is going to paint the nursery.  We completed a gut rehab on our place a little over a year ago and do not plan on repainting the nursery (it is a neutral taupey color) and that we are not going with a 'baby' theme.  He says the look at him completely disgusted.  Ha!

I guess you can never make them all happy.

  • My aunt had an out of town shower for me, and my dad is bringing everything down once the baby is born. My aunt thinks I'm crazy for not wanting it shipped right this minute. Everything else will probably stay boxed until I feel like setting it up. I feel like this whole nesting thing has only manifested itself by me getting rid of things, not setting things up.
  • I'll probably do it a few weeks after my shower which is 11/01. I usually would procrastinate but I'm sure my sisters won't let me. They're doing all the nesting for me, as if it their baby.
  • With DS we left everything in the box until we needed it. Not for any reason other than I never got the nesting thing and had no desire to do any work. We ended up never even using the pnp and took it back almost a year later, still in the box. So far all I have for this LO are some clothes and diapers. I suppose maybe I'll get around to setting things up for him but again, no nesting for me so far.

  • With DD we were completely ready for her about a month before she arrived. Clothes washed and hanging up, diapers in the holder, swing and bouncer set up.

I'm glad I did it that way because nobody wants to be concerned with setting up a swing when it is go time and you have a screaming infant on your hands.

    imageBaby Birthday Ticker TickerBabyFruit Ticker

  • If it requires assembly and you are pretty sure you are going to use it, get it done before baby arrives. You really don't want to be attempting a tricky baby swing assembly while your child is screaming bloody murder and you haven't slept in a week. Chances are you just won't use it at all.

The second I bought it all.
But I am anal retentive and need it done immediately.
  • I must be going through a bad nesting phase or something cause anytime i get something for baby it feels like christmas lol! I have to open it, set it up, mess with it see if it works and whatever else. Her nursery is pretty much set up i just have to wait till after my showers to finish everything else.
  • I like to put things together right away, but mostly because it gives me time to return shit when there is a bent piece, or missing stuff, and once I got a (brand new, in box, never opened) bouncer and the whole seat was moldy in the plastic. BRU return lady was trying to give me grief about where I had "stored" the bouncer after I bought it, and I got a lot of satisfaction showing her I had bought it two days before.

  • If you unpack it now it is one more thing to keep clean. I thought about setting up the crib only and washing clothes and blankets. I will set up the rock n play just before due date. I hate cleaning so I will wait until I need everything else to set up.

  • My shower is this Saturday so it may depend on the item. I am probably going to do some that day and on Sunday, then make my husband help. It will be a special kind of torture for him. We currently have the changer/dresser and crib out together. He still has to build shelves for the closet.

  • I think I took the bouncer and swing out and set up about 2-3 weeks before my due date. I washed the covers too. About a week before, washed a couple NB and 3mo size outfits. The pnp doesn't really require much assembly, only takes a couple minutes to set up but did wash the sheet.

  • I'm going to open a lot of things immediately (shower is 10/25 )but it's more because I'm a giant child and want to see them. Swing and bouncer are going to be hand me downs from a friend so even the things I don't need right away will be unboxed & ready to go.
  • I am impatient and love putting things together so I always open immediately.

  • I've been unpacking/setting up stuff just to make sure it's not busted. The first thing we got for baby was a giant swing that was great until we turned it on and the motor sounded like a dying cat. I'm glad we put ut together because we had time to return it and get one that works. But stuff like bedding is still wrapped up along with anything else that couldn't have a broken or missing part.

  • I rip things out of the box as I get them. I don't want to crush boxes and get them all ready to go to the curb when the snow is here. My shower is next Saturday and I plan on taking them out of the box the day after.

  • I took a lot out of the box and set up to let air out (before winter takes over and I have to put plastic on all the windows to save some money on my heating bill), and to see that all the parts were there/any batteries needed. Also wanted my cat to become familiar with everything.

Okay, but mostly I just wanted to see what everything looked like all set up because I was excited. I don't actually think it was
    necessary.
  • With my first I had everything opened and set up as soon as i got my hands on it - swing, crib, toys, dresser organized, etc. like months before baby was born. This time around is different. I'm due in 9 weeks and I haven't done shit. My plan is to have the bassinet clean and my newborn clothes washed and put away and I will buy diapers on the way home from the hospital. That's pretty much it. Everything I need is here. Somewhere. That being said, I'm sure my nesting phase will kick in big time in the last 2 or 3 weeks and I will get all the newborn stuff back out and organized.
  • I think maybe a month before E was born is when we started getting his room ready and putting things in place. Do it when you are ready to, there is no right or wrong as to when to do things.

  • Everything is still in boxes and the only piece of furniture I have is a glider. My crib probably won't come til after the the baby is born. My shower is in two weeks. I figured once I purchase batteries then I will take everything out of the boxes. I hate purchasing batteries.

I've pulled everything out of the garage and taken whatever out of boxes and set everything up. I'm just now starting to wash clothes as I get them and put them away. I figure it's better to be done early in case of an emergency at this point.

  • Honestly, the only reason we've taken anything out of the boxes (crib and stroller) is to make sure all the pieces are there. I'm one of those paranoid people that would worry that one screw is missing, and if I wait until last minute, then there might not be time to get replacement parts. Only reason. Otherwise, if someone could guarantee that everything is in the box that is supposed to be, we would've waited until maybe the month before

  • Everything we have is sitting in the formal living room in boxes still. I have clothes and books in a laundry basket in the living room still too.

I did take out our carseat last week because I felt the need to play around with something, but it is still covered by the plastic so the cat and dust stay away until we get it installed next month. (Doing it early to avoid the bad weather.)

  • Ummm I have no boxes to open! My shower isn't until Nov 1st. We do have the crib up and nursery decorated! I will open and set stuff up we have a $ year old who will nag us to death if we don't!
  • I opened everything as soon as I got it home. DH and I were like kids opening presents on Christmas. I have no Self control.

  • We set up everything when I was around 30-32 weeks with DS which was around when my showers were.

This time I'm with @IamInigoMontoya‌ - waiting til the last minute lol

I just started getting things ready, but it's mostly because they will be sharing a room. I needed to reorganize things to make room for baby clothes and the crib.

  • Getting a lot of big stuff from relatives (thank goodness!) so it's all still in another state... Planning on going to get most of it next month sometime. We did paint and put the crib together but that's it. I don't have clothes or anything yet (hoping there are some in the hand me down boxes I'm picking up!!)

  • I guess I should start buying stuff that needs to be put together...
  • I'm really going to need something to pass the last week or two of being pregnant and I feel like I can just look forward to killing some time assembling things then. And all of the nursery stuff came from ikea....

This. I always make sure I open it up as soon as it arrives or I get it home to make sure it's on good shape. I got burned once not opening something, and by the time I did and realized it was broken, it was too late to return it.

  • Last time I did it all about a month out... this time I want it done by November so a month and a half out. We may be early though since my hubby and brother have been getting the furniture ready in the nursery and my shower is in Oct.

I have a lot of work stuff in November (even some out of town stuff) and know how miserable I was the last month with my son. Since I have carpal tunnel that has been getting worse and back pain every day I'd rather have it ready to go as soon as I can. Also, though I'm aiming for a vbac I had a c-section with my son (not planned) and know anything can happen on delivery day, if I end up with a c-section again it will take most of my time off to heal and bond with baby.

Plus, then I can just focus on finishing decluttering the house and cleaning the walls and carpets (we had an indoor cat and well with my soon to be 10 yr old the carpets need it). Also, my mom went full term with her first kid and early with the rest of us and just in case I follow suit I'd rather not be caught off guard.

To each their own. I want to spend the 8 weeks I have off with the baby and not worry about setting things up. Plus I'd like the last month before she comes to relax a bit and rest as much as possible.

That being said it a personal preference... to me it would depend on how long you have off work (or if you are stay at home- if I was then I wouldn't be so anal about it all knowing I would have some wiggle room).

Good luck either way you ladies decide!
  • Whenever you are ready but I would wait a little longer.

    1) You might go through a nesting stage and it would be nice to have something to do.
    2) make sure there is enough time to air everything out and exchange/return if damaged.
    3) Don't wait too long because then you are big and it is awkward getting everything out snd set up.
    4) If you have animals I would wait a bit so hair/fur doesn't get on everything or keep that room closed off.

  • I take things out as soon as I get them. But mostly because I'm not working anymore and have nothing better to do but also because I am so excited every time we buy something.
  • We waited until a couple of weeks before the due date so that things could air out and we'd know if it was in good shape.  Well, I say "we", but I totally made DH do all the work while I supervised :)

This time, who knows?  Maybe a week before, maybe after she's here.  DS is a wild man so I'm scared the stuff won't survive if we set it up now.
