RE visit left my head spinning. *personal pity party warning

Sorry I haven't been on this board in a while. I want sure if I fit because we are kinda new to this while thing and I didn't want to bother others with my newbie issues. But here i am again with a new outlook.
We went to the RE's office to get all our test results; blood work, SA and HSG, and to see where we want to go from here. (I got some results when I went in for my ultrasound but my BF was with me today so we went over all test, new and old.
Good news: SA is great, most of my hormones were fine except estrogen was a little high and AMH was a little low. Both chalked up to age. HSG showed both tubes were clear.
Bad news: HSG also showed that I have a T shaped uterus... Really? I had no idea that was even a thing! Wtf?! And since I'm ovulating on CD12 of a 28 day cycle he's concerned as to the quality of my eggs. This is not what I expected to hear today.

As if turning 41 next month wasn't bad enough, knowing that my age is cause for concern as to the imminent rapid decline in the quality of my remaining eggs. And now finding out that most of my uterus is not really a great environment for growing a baby. The RE strongly recommends IVF. If we want to try IUI he thinks it's only worth it for 2 maybe 3 cycles, max.
So now we have to figure out what our plan of action is. What are we emotionally and financially ready for?

I'm sorry for the rant. I'm kind of in a tail spin and had to let it out. I know if I try to talk to anyone about this right now I'm going to cry. So thank you to anyone reading all of this.

Re: RE visit left my head spinning. *personal pity party warning

  • I'm so sorry, no wonder you are upset by this unexpected news! Could the RE give you some more details? For example, is IVF better for the T-shaped uterus because they can better control the number of embryos? Or is IUI with injects enough to possibly overcome the low AMH issue? And, is O-ing a CD12 a guarantee of poor egg quality or just a little hint that it may be a problem?

Since you said the RE strongly recommends IVF, I would also maybe ask what chances he thinks IUI would have...since maybe he is offering a couple IUIs just to help you two feel more comfortable about going more aggressive?

I hope you are able to take some time to reflect and really get your feelings out to your SO, and maybe get some more clarifying details from the RE to help you make such a big decision. Whatever you choose, you will not be alone here on 3T! :)

  • Im so sorry that you got less than optimal news :(. I agree with PP about having a 'real' talk with your RE on your chances of an IUI vs IVF and to get some more clarification. And if you're OOP, I would move straight to IVF. GL!

  • I'm Sorry. I turned 39 the other day, IF sucks as it is, let alone having the clock ticking away. I'm Just putting my opinion out there, I would look into IVF sooner than later. I Didn't want to accept that it's what we needed to do either, but at our age you want the best chance. Good luck!

  • I'm sorry you are going through this.  If I were you, I would start planning on IVF, and while you get all your tests in order, maybe do one IUI.  (That's only if you have coverage for IUIs.  If you are totally out of pocket, I would definitely go straight to IVF, and not waste time/money on IUIs.)  I'm 38, and my RE was pretty clear that embryo banking/IVF is where I need to be.  I spent a lot of money on IUIs that failed. I wasted a lot of time with them. If I had it to do over again, I would have gone straight to IVF. I would also ask your RE if he recommends surgery for your uterus.  I'm guessing you have a bicornuate uterus, or a ute with a septum, based on your description -- but I could be wrong.  If that is the case, most REs will perform surgery to correct this.  If you do need surgery, I would be looking into IVF after you heal.  I'm so, so sorry you are dealing with all of this.  I know there are ladies on this board who have had the septum surgery, and can weigh in too.  Crossing my fingers for you!
  • Thank all you ladies for your support.
@BunnyBerry, @Murrt, @Hmgavin & @Jessimi06 from what the RE informed us yesterday is if we continue on our own we have a 1% chance, IUI = 5% and IVF =30%. And yeah we are all OOP.

I am leaning towards going straight to IVF. Due to my age and all that reside in it (HAHA) MY BF is leaning towards IUI, I think mainly because he doesn't want to accept it or feel the urgency I do. Since we're putting off marriage till after because of stress and finances I know that the $$ of it weighs heavy on his decision.

  • What is it about guys that they can't put themselves in our shoes (or ovaries) and feel the appropriate urgency? Still, 5% isn't 0%! I wish you the best whatever you choose. :)

  • Your % stats sound similar to what I was quoted. Sorry you're having to deal with this. Given that you're 100% OOP, I agree with the PPs who have suggested going right to IVF. GL

Official diagnosis: Unexplained IF. I am 32. I have low ovarian reserve (low AMH), and poor egg quality. I've also been diagnosed with mild glandular developmental arrest (lining problems, detected with EFT).

We are using open ID donor sperm. IUIs #1-7=BFN. IVF September 2014 antagonist protocol, 8R,5M,3F, 5 day transfer of 1 morula = BFN. IVF#2 planned for January 2015 (antagonist protocol + HGH).
