Re: Smelly Inserts

  • i don't do a rinse and spin but the washer drains between the soaks….?  The wash is hot well it's HOT/COLD since that is the only option on my washer.  Detergent is Ecos Free and Clear HE

  • I agree with everything AFWifelife said. You might want to switch detergent even if the rinse and spin does work. A LOT if people have trouble with Ecos and F&C detergent.

what would you recommend? I did a ton of research before picking that one and also being able to FIND the ones on peoples lists of good ones.

  • Yes to what these ladies said. Your routine does not need to be that complicated. A short wash to rinse everything (and I would do warm), then a hot wash with detergent and an extra rinse if you need it.

  • Yep I've use HE specific powder in my HE machine for the last 2 years with no trouble.

  • Do you know if you've got hard water? That could reduce the effectiveness of your detergent. If that's the case, you could also try upping the amount of detergent and/ or adding Calgon to your wash. Plus everything PPs said about simplifying your routine.

That said, you might still want to change detergent -- if you look around at different detergent ratings, Ecos doesn't seem to rate very well, and the microbiostats in F&C detergents are suspected to contribute to odor problems. Also, liquid detergents tend not to be recommended. Lots of people do well with Tide, but if you need to find a fragrance free detergent, there are other options. I've had good experiences with both Country Save and Tiny Bubbles, but had to add Calgon when we moved to a hard water area. I used Allen's when I was traveling last month because it was on hand, and worked just fine.
  • Tide Original (ultra) comes in HE. Check your machine instructions b/c mine says to put the powder in the same detergent cup as the liquid.

  • I am not super experienced but my diapers had a lot of issues recently and I soaked them in a combination of borax/washing soda and calgon in hot water then switched to tide powder immediately following.

I am now a tide convert. I had forgotten what white diapers looked like :/
