Heartburn Remedies

This constant heartburn is really awful. :( I've tried milkshakes and bananas and gum and tums (not all at once, ;) but over the past week or so), and nothing seems to help! Doesn't matter what I eat or how little and spread-out my meals are. AND it's keeping me awake at night.

I know I'm not the only one! Tell me, what heartburn remedies work for you?

Re: Heartburn Remedies

  • I started taking pepcid once a day and it is like a miracle pill. I was taking six tums at a time and it was barely touching my heart burn. Wal-Mart has a generic pepcid for $1 and that's what I got so I could see if it helped. I've kept buying that one since it works so well.

  • Sorry, mama. I have had some killer nights, too. My middle of the night remedy is a small cup of whole plain yogurt followed by a piece or two of candied ginger. It actually usually works.

I have also learned that eating dinner too close to bedtime is a no-no. I try to give myself a good three hours between dinner and sleep (I also have a very small bedtime snack.)

I hope you get some relief soon. It is so painful!

  • Prevacid OTC ! I've been on it daily for months. I was completely miserable before taking it. Lately I don't eat too much at a time which helps. It takes a few days for the med to kick in and the reflux will come back if you stop for several days. Tums did nothing. I was to the point of sleeping straight up and the acid would still choke me at night. Awful!!
  • Pepcid helped me a lot. Runs would only work for so long and then the heartburn would rage. Especially at night, it would wake me up. So I started taking a Pepcid with dinner and it has really helped.

  • Thanks for all the great suggestions! I was hoping to steer clear of medications and stick with the more natural remedies, but I am to the point of trying anything!!!

I haven't tried frozen pineapple or almonds or yogurt or ginger, etc...all these great suggestions are totally new to me! Will give them all a try. Thank you! ^:)^

  • Did you try pickle juice? It has been mentioned a few times, but I haven't tried it yet. Chocolate milk works for me!

Sounds a bit yucky, but I'm up for the experiment!! ;)

So I was curious and looked up a few more and what I found was raw, unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar mixed with water, also a spoonful of good quality yellow mustard( yum?) and then aloe juice but make sure you get the kind with the laxative component removed ;) Hope you find something that works for you!!

Edit to add- all of thess are separate treatments

These sound even scarier to me than the pickle juice, lol. Will have to report whether they work...and whether or not I successfully kept them down. Hehe

  • I didn't drink pickle juice, but I ate a few pickles and I swear it helped. Vinegar is a weak acid, so much less acidic than your stomach and helps aid in neutralizing the acid causing less heartburn.

  • Apples, or milk always help me. Also Alka Seltzer chews are AMAZING!! Tums never helped me, but these did ALOT!

I've heard natural honey is a good cure, haven't tried it yet. Apparently just a spoonful will do the trick.
For me, Rolaids and a stick of gum are still working.
  • Pickle juice has been my go to for heartburn this pregnancy, and it works very quickly for me. Hope something works for you soon!

Couple of ideas: spoon of vanilla ice cream, Keifer shot every morning, papaya enzymes, sleeping propped up in bed, and 2 T of Apple Cider vinegar mixed with 2T of honey
Each of the above is a separate remedy to try (I know some have already been mentioned)

As for some of the previous ones mentioned: aloe MAY stimulate contractions...be fairly warned Also, go easy on the peppermint as it works really well in small, infrequent amounts for heartburn and to freshen breath. Used on a regular basis it can actually loosen the muscles that keep the stomach closed, allowing more reflux, and making your heartburn MUCH worse

    ETA: spacing

  • Sorry for your acid @emerald27 - I feel your pain as Ive been in the same boat for months, but especially this past month. I finally gave in and started taking pepcid and that along with two tums before bed has helped. But some very interesting non-medicine remedies on here - thanks for posting as I may try a few of these myself. I love honey, so would love if that works. I hate pickles - so may have to avoid the pickle juice.

  • I'd like to reiterate that I only suggested a couple drops of peppermint oil and not a gallon.
