Doc said I'm "measuring big" ?!?!

The doctor brought out his handy measuring tape to measure my belly. He said I'm "measuring big"? What the hell does that mean? I didn't think to ask....help?!!!

Re: Doc said I'm "measuring big" ?!?!

  • How far along are you (I'm on mobile)? My doctor doesn't measure after 35 weeks because it means nothing. Actually the measurements generally aren't a lot to be concerned with, but you should ask your doctor in either case. It could be a tiny bit big or a lot. You don't even know that much, so until you talk to him again, I wouldn't worry.

  • Usually you measure weeks by cm. 38 weeks = 38cm. And of course you can measure bigger or smaller by 1-2cm. My midwife said measurements are subject to human error like anything else so if your doc isn't concerned then don't be.

  • My doctor told me last week that the stomach measuring becomes inaccurate as the baby starts to shift downward during the last few weeks.  He said that your measurements can change almost daily because of the position of the baby.

  • You could always just call your doctor for clarification.

  • My doctor told me the same. And how he explained it me was im 37 weeks but basically my bBy is growing so big that I'm basically 38-39 weeks. It just means your baby is bigger then usual. And it's not a bad thing!(: It may cause pitting edema and high blood pressure so don't jump to think the worst if that happens. I did and my dr told me it was 100% normal for when the baby grows bigger then what it's suppose to.
  • I did and he said on both that they was normal. As I said in what I wrote. High blood pressure and pitting isn't ALWAYS bad! People take to much info from the Internet to seriously. I've asked my dr and he said both are good signs. My high blood pressure is due to her laying on a vein in between my spine and uterus.

See this is why you shouldn't ask internet strangers for advice that you should be asking your doctor for. OP I would ignore everything said by this PP. It does not mean you are basically a week ahead. It could mean any number of things. I consistently measure ahead because I am overweight. Doesn't mean jack shit about the baby. It could be the position baby is in. It could mean that baby just hit a growth spurt. It doesn't really mean that time has fast forwarded for you and you are just further along. Also, please do not ignore changes in blood pressure, as PP suggested. Call your dr about those right away!!

And she's measured a week over since day one. You aren't a doctor so you can't make the call weather or not it's false or true. Also I'm not over weight so it's not due to that. I weighted 110 before I was pregnant...I'm 37 1/2 weeks and weight a firm 139. I don't think I'm considered fat.
  • I've been tested for toxemia, protein in urine and Gest. Diabetes. He said my high BP is due to her laying on a vein and that's not serious. It's not high 24/7 it only gets that way when I lay on my back for long periods of time, I have to lay on my side or stomach.
  • Ok wow this very simple question has caused a lot of tension. Thanks to those who took it at face value. I was never panicked or scared. If I were, clearly I wouldn't "ask internet strangers". Way to to classy nicb13. I didn't think to ask my doctor when I was there what he meant. Thought to myself, "hmm, maybe others ladies might know what that reference was". Let's not troll others peoples posts and look for fault in them. Obviously we all have other more important things to do then critique each other.
  • Well Ladies. This has been real fun. Good to know everyone has so much time on their hands to disparage others. And with that, half a blessed day.
  • Two in one day?

I just want to know how you are still laying on your stomach?!? I can only lay on my side. :-/
  • I was told this as well. But I also get told on a daily basis by strangers when they ask if I'm having twins. I'm not.

I got some extra sonograms just to check her size and fluid level out of it and was also told I won't be going past my due date.

It's not a bad thing or anything to worry about!
