Ethan was kind of thrown in there as a last measure. I think it is too popular too, but DH likes it. Husband is Scottish, that is where the Gannon comes from. I have always liked the name Porter, but I think the middle name sucks with it. DH is set on the middle name.

I like Ethan best, though I'm biased. I wouldn't call it non-traditional. It's a classic-ish sounding biblical name that's been fairly popular for the last decade.
Porter makes me think of the job title, and of the word "portly." Ballard just sounds odd to me as a first name.
Gannon is sort of OK. I love Ethan; it was one of our top choices when I was pregnant with our twin boys but we ruled it out because it was too popular.
I knew a guy in college named Gannon and have a good association with it; if your DH is Scottish then that is a good option. I love Ethan but it's not really unusual. Porter makes me think of beer. Ballard is a neighborhood in Seattle famous for lutefisk and bad drivers.

Ethan by default. I don't even really like it, but, to me, it's better than the others. Honestly I'd get onto BTN or Nymbler and look for more Scottish names. Surely there are better ones out there (or look at Outlander).

I thought of Seattle's Ballard locks when I saw Ballard Loche. Not the best association. If you're going for non-traditional, Ethan doesn't really fit that description. Gannon and Porter are last names to me, but if I had to choose I'd go with Gannon.
All fabulous criticisms! Seriously. Feed back is good. Griffin makes its way on and off the list, but it too is like Ethan, not so untraditional. It was NOT this hard to name DD. Although, most hated her name too (Maisey Noelle), then it grew on people, after she was born.

Griffin is awesome. It's on my short list. It may be somewhat popular (maybe bc of Griffin Dunne?). It's a known name in my southern town (maybe bc of Griffin, GA) but it is not a name for everyone. A lot of people on this board don't like it. I think it could fit your "non-traditional" criteria?
I like it better than the other names you've mentioned so you can change my vote
Well, shit. I may just stick with Nacho, cause that is what he has been called for a while now...... (I hate cheese. Hate. Hate. Hate. Pregnant with him, I cannot get enough of it. With hot sauce)

Ha! I LOVE fish! LOOOOVE! When I was pregnant with DD I was NAUSEATED by it! Go fig. Also I was pescatarian for over 20 years , raised to feel very strongly about it ethically too... and I became a paleo-style omnivore mid-second tri.
I'm glad I named DD Oona instead of Turkey though You'll find something that you love by the time You have to fill out the birth certificate for sure.
I'm partial to Griffin as I have one. Ethan doesn't seem to fit your criteria at all, and to me it's a little boring. I love different names but I can't get behind Gannon or Ballard. What about Gunnar, Fletcher, or Flynn? Our 2nd boy is Deacon, which is different but my for everyone. other names we considered: Leo, Elliott, Rowan, Finn.
Re: Opinions- Non Traditional Boy Names
I like Ethan best, but I wouldn't consider Ethan a non-traditional name. Your others sound like last names.
Ballard just sounds odd to me as a first name.
I love Ethan; it was one of our top choices when I was pregnant with our twin boys but we ruled it out because it was too popular.
Ethan is also nice but the other two are NMS.

I like Ethan but I wouldn't call it non-traditional. I also love Porter but only because I love Porter Wagoner! I voted for Porter.
