Being Stupid about a Name?

We were super happy to hear the good news for Chelsea Clinton and her husband this morning about their new, healthy baby girl.

However, when I told my husband they named her Charlotte...

(him) "Well...I guess we scratch that name off our list, right?"

(me) "...exactly...right?"

We still have about 5-10 names we are debating, including Charlotte (in honor of her great-granddad Charles).

I can't tell if we would be stupid for scratching it from the list or stupid to leave it on the list.

Anyone else have any (possibly irrational) reasons they rethought names?

Re: Being Stupid about a Name?

  • My daughter's
Name is Charlotte so I wasn't thrilled to find out about Chelsea Clinton, however I get nothing but compliments on the name and I really do love it,

  • I think it's pretty, and while they're high profile, I don't think it would be a deal breaker for me :)
  • It is a beautiful name! I wouldn't think you would need to worry about the Clinton's grand-daughter being in the spotlight too much. She probably won't be actively involved in politics for a while either. ;)
  • I like it. And, if it's a name you're seriously considering, don't scratch it off only for this reason. We had liked Quentin for this baby from the beginning, but we got flak from friends about it. We scratched it off and tried to come up with something else. We kept coming back to it, though, and eventually we decided to screw the haters and go with it. We made the announcement today at my shower, and everyone was cool about it, even the original detractors. It's what we wanted, and we stuck to our guns. :)

  • I don't think Chelsea's kid is going to up the popularity a whole lot- it's already a super common name.

  • I definitely wouldn't cross it off the list. It's a pretty name, and I don't think it will be an issue because it's now associated with the Clinton family.

  • Charlotte is the #11 most popular baby name in the US right now. It's so common, no one will even make that connection come December.

  • As PP have said, it's common at the moment and not like people will think there is a connection between the two when the time comes. It was on our top 5 but was ruled out when it didn't make our top 3.

  • Go for it! Charlotte is a good name if you want to honor your family member too. :)
  • I can't imagine basing my kid's name on a celebrity's choice. There's also the spider, SATC character and Bronte sister.

  • Go with the name you love. Don't let a celebrity or random internet strangers dictate the name you choose.

  • Honestly I heard she had her baby but I didn't even know they decided on Charlotte. I don't think they're high profile enough to even give it a second thought. It's hard enough naming babies, don't let nonsense stand in your way
  • I didn't even know she had the baby... I think you'll be ok.

  • This is the first I've heard of her even having a baby. I think you're safe. Unless you have some weird hate for the Clintons in general (or if your last name is also Clinton) you shouldn't let it bother you. None of us will be giving out kids 100% unique names. Unless we name them something awful or spheled yoonyque.

  • Ehh I wouldn't worry about it. Charlotte is a beautiful name and fairly common, so I don't think it's a big deal.

As long as you weren't planning to name your baby North. Because.. well.. then, you're screwed. You can't use Kimye's ideassss!!
