Dental issues

i have been up since 3 AM with the most ridiculous toothache of sorts. Ugh. I think a wisdon tooth is growing in, and where it's breaking through the gum it is hitting my cheek and everything is swelling!! I couldn't even eat dinner last night :( supposed to go to a bachelorette party in Boston tonight (bride is pregnant too, so not a drinking night but painting and a midnight show) and I can't imagine staying up 24 hours straight and not being able to eat anything. Worst. Timing. Ever. I'm going to try to get an emergency dentist visit in before I head out. I've tried Tylenol, brushing, mouthwash,, warm salt water... Any other suggestions ladies???

  • Suck on a hot wash cloth in the back of your mouth. Then go to a CVS or someplace and buy some oragel

  • It sounds like pericoronitis, which is an infection of the gums arms an erupting tooth. The typical treatment is as week of antibiotics and a prescription mouthwash called chlorhexidine.

Do you have a dentist that you see our have seen as a kid? Some might be able to call those things in for a patient of record, instead of looking for someone with weekend hours.

    Feel better!

  • If you can't find a dentist to help, may call your after hours OB/midwife line? If it's an infection, I'd be worried that if I let it go it could hurt LO. I'm a worry wart and it probably couldn't, but I'd want to check and make sure with my doctor.
  • If you have a dentist that you see regularly, call them ASAP (since it's Saturday) and see if they will see you as an emergency patient.  If you have an infection, antibiotics are going to be the first line of defense before the tooth comes out. You will start feeling much better with 24-48 hours since the bacteria is causing the swelling and the swelling is causing the pain.

If you end up going to the ER or OB and they give you antibiotics, make sure it is a 10 day regimen and the correct dosage.  As a dentist, I have had too many patients come in after a week of taking meds only to find out the ER dr just willy nilly prescribed some amoxicillin, not looking up the correct rx for dental infection.  Then we have to start over with the correct rx.

If it's a lower tooth and the swelling gets really bad, head directly to the ER.  Infections in this area can potentially spread to the submandibular, submental and sublingual spaces cutting off your airway.  This does not happen often, I've seen 2 cases in 8 years but life threatening.  Dental infections are not something to let linger.

  • This is what happened to me 5-6 years ago and I left it so long I couldn't open my mouth. I had all four pulled and was on antibiotics for what felt like forever. Hope you can get in and get it taken care of!

What???  That's awesome!  Sometimes I feel so nerdy about teeth:)  I was practicing in TX until we moved to Europe 2 years ago.  I have been able to do some volunteer work with the Red Cross to keep my hand skills up though.  And DH is an endodontist so we get to talk teeth everyday:)  My plan is to start back regularly once this newest baby is 6 months old.  Are you currently working right now? What part of the country are you in?

  • Thanks everyone! My dentist got me in this morning. Infected wisdom tooth coming through. Terrified for the extraction next week though :( My doc called me in some Tylenol with codine bc the dentist just gave me an antibiotic. Hoping this pain somewhat simmers down so I can enjoy the night out. Gracias for everyone's input and suggestions!

@animalcrckr‌ Haha awesome! I work in Maryland, just outside of DC. You are my new dental hero, we are hoping for four babes, too :) Are you guys military? I work three days a week now, and stay home with DD the rest so it's kind of the best of both worlds.

Yeah, DH is military.  I was for a number of years as well and then switched over to the civilian side and associated in a private practice PT.  We ended up moving and for several reasons I could not work here, one being that dentists cannot work while pregnant.  I find that completely absurd since I worked up until the day my first two were born.  Since we've been here I have flown back to the States a few times for various temp jobs and volunteer a few days/month in a US affiliated emergency clinic.  But for the most part consider myself a SAHM.  To be honest, I cannot imagine working much right now anyway.  Our house is complete chaos with a 6, 4 and 1 year old.  I can only imagine what it will be like with the addition of one more:)

I'm glad they got you in!  Feel better soon!  I just went through two root canals in the last month, so know how you feel and it was miserable!
