Is this safe?

Why does nobody get how precious breast milk is ?!? My supply is slowing so every ounce is like gold. Today my aunt took DS out and took some food and a couple bottles with her. When she came home I thought she had given him all the bottles but there was one left in his food bag. She didn't even tell me, just dropped everything in the nursery for me to find later. My question is this, the milk was cool-ish but definitely not cold can I re-refrigerate or freeze it? I could give it to him and pump but when I pump I get 2 ounces if I'm lucky so I really don't want to use up a bottle if I am home and can feed him myself...What would you do

PS- I think it was probably out of the refrigerator for 1.5 hours or so...

Re: Is this safe?

  • If it was only out of the fridge 1.5 hours total, I am sure it's fine. I'd probably use it sooner rather than later.

  • I'd also give it a good sniff test before using to be sure, but breastmilk is pretty tough.

  • Do you think I would be ok freezing it ?
  • When something like this happens, I almost always go ahead and put it in the fridge then give a sniff test and sometimes a taste test. Like you, every ounce is gold and I'm not about to dump a 4 oz bottle if I don't have too.

i work 2 weekends a month and on weekends DH gives LO bottles. a few weekends ago i came home and was surprised to see he had gone through ALL the bottles in the fridge (i had over 20 ounces set out) - she only had 3 feedings while I was gone at work.  I asked DH what happened, he decided to THROW AWAY any milk she hadn't finished during a session.  I almost cried. I wanted to rip his eyes out. i had to explain to him how much of my day is actually spent pumping and that each ounce is precious, you don't throw the unused after each feeding and that in general you can use for next feeding if not more than 4 hours.
