Yes! And I didn't know it was a " Texas" until I left for college. Even the hobby lobbies there had special mum displays with all the area highschool ribbons and trinkets for decorating them.
I'm in Georgia and never heard of them until I moved to DH's small hometown. They're not enormous though. They're very cute down here! Football's a big deal here. Homecoming is next week and the town pretty much shuts down on Friday for the parade and game.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
Those are hideous. Are you meant to wear them to the dance to cover up an unflattering dress or carry them to the game and use them to hide road brews and stay warm?
Yes. The people who had dates to homecoming exchanged mums/garters. We'd have an entire week of crazy themes (crazy hair day/color war/wear your clothes backward/twin day/etc.) and Friday was spirit day and that's when we would exchange mums/garters and war them to the football game that night.
ETA:
The are fun to make as I made my brothers' dates for years. While they are fun to make, they are hella expensive.
I saved mine up until I got married and then finally trashed them.
Tradition at my school senior girls mums were the only ones that could be white and silver.
I used to work for a florist in a wealthier part of town and moms would seriously spend $300+ on them. They would get every single trinket put on them. They weighed a ton. I can't imagine wearing them all day.
My best friend grew up in Alabama. I'm making her a mum for her birthday. I bought some random trinkets, lights and am going to rummage through my crap at home to see what other randomness I can tie on
