Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Misoprostol

My D&E is scheduled for tomorrow sometime, whenever the hospital calls me apparently and I'm on my way to pick up my perscription for misoprostol because my body does not seem interested in letting this little one go. Although I've previously had a D&E I had started to miscarry naturally prior to the surgery and have never had to take this pill before.

For the ladies who have taken it how long did it take for you to start bleeding? I've got to take one pill at 10pm tonight and another at 6am. But he told me that if I start "bleeding excessively" to go to the ER and they will bump up my surgery time. I am assuming that's so I do not pass the fetal tissue naturally as we want to have it tested, although I did not think to clarify that. He also was vague on what "bleeding excessively" meant. He said if it's like a period but my periods are terribly light. Definitely not excessive bleeding. I've miscarried twice naturally as well so maybe that type of flow?

Just looking for any personal experience of what this was like for anyone else. I know we are all different but interested to hear what I can perhaps expect to happen? Thanks ladies :)

Re: Misoprostol

  • I took misoprostol on Tuesday. My Dr gave me 800 mg bucally (in my mouth). I had HEAVY bleeding and severe cramping. I was taking Vicodin and 800 mg of ibuprofen and I was still in a lot of pain. At the worst, I was soaking overnight pads in about 30 minutes. My Dr told me to go to the ER if I was soaking more than 2 pads in an hour for two hours. I was also passing large clots--the size of mandarin oranges. I took the pills at 1:30 and the bleeding didn't start until 7:30. Everyone is different though. Good luck to you and I'm so sorry for your loss.

  • Well I actually just picked up this prisciption today. I have to put 4 tabs into my vagina and within 24 hours I should miscarry. I plan on taking the pill tomorrow night so that I have someone home with me during that time. My doctor prescribed me Norco and ibprofen for pain. My doctor also stressed that I should not be alone during the 24 hours because of bleeding and the risk of bleeding to much and passing out. I will know more within the next 48 hours :(
  • Hrmm. My doctor gave me nothing for pain management. And he told me to take one pill vagunally at 10pm tonight and another at 6am tomorrow. However when I got to the pharmacy they gave me four pills with instructions to take 1-2 twice a day. I called my doctor and he verified just one tonight and one tomorrow. So hopefully that's going to work. Sounds like the surgery will be tomorrow morning or early afternoon. That means I'll only be getting 400mg of the drug though. Wonder why mines less? And why I need to take it before bed. Sounds like a sleepless night is ahead! Hopefully it won't get so bad I have to go to the ER early.

  • I know that it softens the cervix, maybe that's the intention with the lower dose?
  • Well Google helped for once. Apparently 400mg is the recommended dosage of misoprostol when it's being used prior to surgery to partially dilate. Larger doses are to assist with having the miscarriage at home. Makes sense now.

  • Well after multiple debacles and a very horrible painful night and morning the surgery is done and I am at home desperately hoping to catch up on some sleep. Very much hope I do not ever need to take that drug again, I thought having started to miscarry naturally three other times I knew what I was in for. That was definitely not a correct assumption. Feeling a lot less pain since surgery though. That's again for all the help and stories ladies. It was greatly appreciated.

  • Feel better soon KristinNP!
  • I've taken the meds once before, miscarried naturally once before and had a d&c. The tablets were by far the worst of my experiences and I personally would not have them again. I hope your doing ok after your surgery, sending you hugs
