Baby Names

Dad to be needs honest opinions

Okay so my wife and I talked about names over dinner and I need some honest opinions. Are names that end in the same letter too much alike? Is it wierd to give twins the same middle name?

  • We don't know if we're having twins but its common on both sides of the family. The middle name curiousity was brought up by MIL because my wife and I talked about naming a baby girl after my mom at family dinner and I dont want to cause conflict by not naming the baby after her
  • A friend of mine has twin girls and both of them have her maiden name as their middle name. I don't see anything wrong with that.
  • Are names that end in the same letter too much alike?
    Not unless they also rhyme

Is it wierd to give twins the same middle name?
    Yes

  • my wife and I were talking about how the twins on my side of the family have the same mn (my nana and her sister and my cousins' kids) and how the ones on her side (her great aunts and nephews) dont
  • oops my bad the twins on my side dont and the twins on her side do
  • Same middle is certainly strange. Names that end in the same letter (or begin with the same letter for that matter) don't seem that weird to me.
  • I would avoid names that have the beginning and ending sound/letter. Even if they don't rhyme, I still prefer each name to have a distinct sound.

I would not do the same MN even if it is a family tradition, ie all women in her family have the MN Kay and you are having two daughters. I'd pick a MN to honor a different g-ma in the family, preferably on the other side of the family.

    Exactly.

  • Are names that end in the same letter too much alike? -- Nope.  All of my names end with an "en" sound (though they are not all spelled that way).  It can get sing-songy in some tones, but that has never bothered me.  The worst thing for me was I NEVER had enough letters in alphabet blocks/magnets to spell out my whole name the way my brothers could, even if I turned U's over to use as N's.

Is it weird to give twins the same middle name? -- Yes.  I think it's odd to use the same name for siblings, even if they are not twins.  I don't mind matcy-matchy twin names, but I'd definitely side-eye the same name on twins.

    I totally agree

  • The same middle name will just be plain weird. Twins are their own individuals and should have their own names. I think in order not to hurt any of the grandma's feelings, don't pick either of their names. There are so many names out there, you can start a new family name with the twins.

Also, you can consider naming the twins with a name that are connected in some way:

    Examples:

    Cara and Mia
In Italian Cara means "beloved" and Mia means "my". Together they mean "my beloved", as the phrase caramia.

    Grace and Hannah
    Hannah means "grace" in Hebrew.

    Jonathan and Matthew
Both names are formed from the Hebrew elements yehu "the Lord" and matis "gift", but the elements are in different order.

    Leon and Noel
The names are each other in reverse.

  • We never even thought about Twilight! Man it didnt even register until now well darn lol
  • I wouldn't give twins the same middle name.  Agree with PPs that ending in the same letter depends.  It's fine as long as they aren't too matchy.  Alexandra and Victoria is fine, Timmy and Tommy= NO.
  • Ending the same is fine if they don't rhyme. I've got a Jaydn and Tristan and feel their names go together fine. My youngest is Wesley and I'd never name another kid Leslie.

Also, I know an entire extended family who gave every girl the middle name Marie. All the cousins and siblings share the middle name (one family had 4 girls. All ___ Marie)

    Please don't do that.

  • I don't see why any siblings would have the same MN. Better no MN imo than using the same one for all. Unless maybe there is some really important family reason I guess
  • Thanks guys! I think we've got a few really great options for either a boy or a girl
  • I'm just jumping in to say NOT to give your kids nearly identical names.  I'm Christina and have a brother named Christopher.  My dad was convinced it was not too similar but it is literally the exact same name (my dad was 20 when I was born and 23 when my brother was born, so what did he know about names anyay!).

I like Kieran Roberts and Cullen Henry!!!! Both are great. Cullen is a family name for me, my Uncle's middle name and one of my older cousins middle names (he has two) and my little cousins first name (older cousins son)

Edit: didn't see your last post until after posting this comment. Congrats on picking names!! Not 100% crazy about Sutton but I think they all go nicely together, whichever names end up being used!!
  • I like Kieran Roberts and Cullen Henry just fine. Kieran and Cullen are a bit matchy together since they start and end with the same sound (despite the K/C difference) but not bad. They are fine names. I personally might consider something like Keiran Roberts and Henry Cullen as an alternative.

Ah, I was going off a pp's reply in my previous comment and hadn't seen this yet.
I like Stellan OK too but I do find it a bit matchy with either Kieran or Cullen. But definitely not as matchy as Kieran and Cullen together. of your choices I think I would go with Stellan Nicholas and Kieran Roberts.

  • If we did do matching mn's it would be a family name but we have no plans to do so we were just discussing the idea and wanted opinions

I will say, if it's a family name like the mom's maiden name then I think it's nice.

  • We like both names a lot with no plans to use my wife's maiden name as a mn.We've decided that if we have a boy we'll choose between Stellan and Kieran when we meet him. As far as girls go unless we find another name we love as much as Leona Grey we'll either do the same or stick with Leona.
