"Lovey" for bedtime

Forgive my stupid question, but I'm kind of confused about this whole "lovey" for bedtime thing. A friend gave me a lovey and told me I should use it with the baby for bedtime. However the lovey is a washcloth size soft blanket, with a frog head on it. Isn't it unsafe for a baby to sleep with anything in the crib? Couldn't they just as easily put that over their face as anything else?

Re: "Lovey" for bedtime

  • I don't get how people use them either but I was given like 6. Babe is really at the point now where she will grab any fabric she can get her hands on and put it up to her mouth, yet she can't pull fabric away once it's on her face.

I wouldn't give it to her unsupervised.

  • I second everyone else. DS pulls his blanket up to his face but won't move it back down so he gets no blankets for nighttime sleep.
  • We were given 3 - two are the small washcloth-sized ones with soft animal heads like you mentioned, and one is a bit larger (kitchen towel/hand towel size) with a lamb head on it. She loooves the bigger one and so we give it to her during the day when she's hanging in her RnP or on the play mat. Never in the crib, and if she falls asleep with it in the RnP or something, I just move it away from her face and out of reach until she wakes up.

  • I got one of those to but DD only plays with it during the day.  She does sleep with a aden & anais muslin blanket.  She does put it by her face but will move is away and they are breathable which is what i like about them.  She likes having her lovey with her more then a paci.  My 6 year old still sleeps with a lovey!!
  • J has one and loves it, but I'm too worried to let him have it in his bed. He loves to chew on it and during nap time when he has it, it always ends up over his face. Nap time is fine with me because I can see him. Night time, I'm sleeping too, so if he gets it over his face, I'll never know.
  • What everyone else said.

To add though...DD got several when she was a baby but was never even a little interested in them to hold, play with, etc. (she does love a few dozen stuffed animals and now insists on them ALL sleeping with her) But now that little brother is here (who by the way LOVES all the loveys) she mysteriously all of the sudden has so much interest in these little loveys....funny how that works :)
  • Maybe I'm alone here, but I don't understand the concept of purposely trying to get LO hooked on an object. I feel that's just setting myself up for a total meltdown the day it breaks or gets lost just because "it looks so cute".
I mean if it happens naturally, so be it - but on purpose? IDGI

Because it was the only way my one year old would go to sleep without hysterical crying.

Ah haha. My youngest has about 4 night nights, all the same... He'd never lose it so it's not a issue.... By the time he was 4 months old I was for sure putting blankets in the crib... He wouldn't sleep without it...
