NTTGPR: Book Recommendations

I'm a book fanatic and always asking for book recommendations from people. I'm finishing up The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley right now. It was a random find in Barnes & Noble a while back, the description sounded interesting, so I gave it a try. But it's sorely lacking in plot, so I'm gearing up for my next read and wondering what y'all would recommend.

My recent faves:
Gone Girl
Delirium
Divergent series
Reconstructing Amelia
Brain on Fire

  • I really loved The BookThief, 11/22/63, These is my Words, and pretty much all the books you just listed.

  • I keep forgetting that Book Thief is sitting on my shelf, waiting to be read! Of course, it's sitting there with probably hundreds of other books waiting to be read...

  • Do you read memoirs that are hilarious? If so, I recommend anything that Jen Lancaster writes, specifically Such A Pretty Fat and The Tao of Martha.

For easy reads, with recipes, I like Stacy Ballis, Good Enough to Eat, Out to Lunch, and Off the Menu.

Recently I've read The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan, I really liked it.

Also, the Cousins' War series or the Tudor books by Philippa Gregory are fun reads.

Wine&Cupcakes, I feel like it's the first day of Kindergarten and I'm about to ask you to be my best friend because we both like wine and cupcakes. It's logical, yes? Seriously, though, I think I could live off wine and cupcakes alone. And be perfectly content.

Also, I have been searching high and low for Flynn's other books at our local used book stores. But they're never there! I'm going to have to break down and pay full-price for them. Or break down and get a new library card because I know mine has got to be expired!

ETA: I'm really bad at tagging, guys! Why I no can tag you, Wine&Cupcakes??

  • @bibliothecary‌, that is definitely a strategy I use and often. That, Pinterest book boards, and just random down-the-rabbit-hole Amazon searches! But I love hearing recommendations from people about what their favorites are, what they're currently reading, etc. :)

@DaikokuJess‌, Till We Hace Faces is on my shelf, too! I've never heard anyone recommend it, though, so I'm excited to have it recommended now! It'll move up my to-read list for sure!

  • @JustinsLovo

I love how you italicized the book titles!

    =;

I love all of Lisa Gardner's books.....if anyone knows a similar style author please let me know.  Also, Gone Girl was an excellent read!  I'm sure the movie won't be nearly as good but when are they ever?

  • If you like Divergent, you may like the City of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau.
  • I am reading the eragon series and I Also like the series that starts with a book name horde. Give horde a few chapters and then it gets good. :) my favorite book of all time is the giver but don't watch the movie.
  • If you're wanting something Halloween-ish, I just read Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Beautifully written and delightfully macabre!

Me too!  I don't know why this isn't as popular as some other series.  I think the terrible movie with Bill Murray a few years ago did a real disservice to this series.

  • @Dbarar‌ I was just going to tell you about the divergent series until I seen you had that as a recent fav. Did you read all the books? I'm on the 2nd one right now about half way through. Also I heard the hunger games series are real good I might start reading those when I'm done with the divergent series.

  • @fmf5‌ I've read the entire Divergent series and it is amazing! I'm jealous that you're getting to experience it for the first time! And yes, read Hunger Games for sure if you like Divergent. I liked gone girl but I preferred flynns other novels better, sharp objects and dark places.

Into the wood by tana French is a great, suspenseful murder investigation.

Fall on your knees by Ann Marie macdonald is my favorite book.

Anything by Sarah waters, but I especially liked the fingersmith and tipping the velvet.

This is one of my favorite dystopian series.

Along this same line is a series called Shadow Children by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The books are short and actually written for preteens but they are so good. I reread the whole series every couple of years.
  • @Dbarar‌ I thought the first Maze Runner book was really great too, and was so disappointed in the sequels. I think I am going to save that movie for Netflix sometime next year. I just read the whole Divergent series this week, including the Four short stories. And then I watched the movie yesterday. I thought I wasn't going to like Divergent at all - for some reason I thought it was like a Hunger Games Lite - but I loved it. I want to watch the movie again, but my husband suggested I wait at least 24 hours before watching a 2 1/2 hour movie again.
  • @SwivelChair5‌ Divergent is one of the best series I've read in a while. My DH has only seen the movies and he prefers Divergent over Hunger Games. We just watched Divergent again last night. So good! I'll be retreading the whole series before the Insurgent movie comes out, like I did with the Harry Potter series when the movies were coming out.

As for Maze Runner, we're seeing it tonight. I'm fully prepared to not like it very much, but I really loved the book, so I want to see the screen version. Don't really care if they do Scorch Trials or Death Cure movies, though.

  • I loved "The Perfume Collector" by Kathleen Tessaro and "An Inconvenient Wife" by Megan Chance.  Both of these had very different endings than what I thought they would be.

I also recommend "The Crimson Petal and the White" by Michael Faber. Epic book. I read that or "Madame Bovary" when I'm in between library books.

  • I just finished Sharp Objects (By Gillian Flynn) this week, it was good.  I also read her other one that was good too.  I enjoyed Book Thief, 11/22/63,  and last week I read The Maze Runner.  I enjoyed that.
