Fit Friday

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you have a good weekend coming up. As a reminder, this is a check-in for anyone who is trying to be active during pregnancy. If you're new, jump on in!

So how did your week go? Any fitness victories? Any troubles?

And this week's question isn't exactly fitness related, but it seems "wellness" related:
Are you treating yourself to anything during this pregnancy? Pedicures, massage, vacation, sleeping in?

Re: Fit Friday

  • I'm continuing to go strong and get in a ~40 minute jog each day!  This morning was a bit trickier than usual though.  I got my flu shot yesterday and my muscles feel a little achy...I hope it's just from the shot and I'm not coming down with something!

I don't have much time to treat myself during this pregnancy as I have a 3-year-old DD who is going through a Mommy favoritism phase.  She won't let DH do much of anything!  I'd give anything to soak in a nice warm bath for an hour :-)

  • I'm treating myself to pedicures and sleep:)  I'm a little hesitant to get a message because I heard it is difficult to find a good prenatal masseuse and some just say that they do prenatal of advertising. So being over cautious. But that just leaves more time and funds for pedicures:)
  • So how did your week go? Any fitness victories? Any troubles?
It wasn't as good as I would have hoped.  I missed one walk during to just being too tired and one Zumba class because I had packed my schedule too tight.  Bah.  I hate that.  I literally feel deprived and angry when I can't make my classes.

Are you treating yourself to anything during this pregnancy? Pedicures, massage, vacation, sleeping in?
I'm hoping to have a few massages before baby comes.  Probably starting around 30 weeks. My schedule is so busy it's hard to fit in.  I stuck with my regular accupunture appts, though, which I find relaxing.  We're also going to go for a little pre-baby weekend in Seattle sans our DS.  Yay!

  • It was a good week fitness-wise for me.  I got all of my workouts in, although my calves are really starting to burn/get tight during anything that involves too much jumping or bouncing in the fitness classes.  I am trying to keep up with foam rolling and stretching them.  Also the a/c is broken in my gym's fitness studio, so I am sweating more than usual and sometimes I can't go all out because I'm afraid I'm going to slip on the sweat. (Luckily the heat hasn't bothered me too much, I'm more afraid of falling.)

I got a massage while I was in CO which was amazing and I hope to at least get one more during this pregnancy.  I get fairly regular manicures and pedicures - maybe once a month. I'm going today because we have a wedding tomorrow and it's hot out so I am wearing open-toed shoes.

  • I just made a post about starting aquatic therapy today.. it was fabulous. I have been having a lot of trouble being active due to some really excruciating back and groin pain, so I'm happy to have found something that works. My school offers free pool access to all students so I plan to start spending more time there.
I have an appointment for a pedicure tomorrow :) It's called a stress-fix pedicure. An hour of massage, clay mask, towel wrap, and polish...I can't wait.
  • I have been getting a good amount of walking in every day.  Taking today off to rest since I have grossly swollen ankles and am feeling a little "off".

This weekend I am going to Blarney Castle and then meeting with my 5th cousins at their present day farm.  Rather excited.  :)

GTKY Question:  Manicures & Pedicures are a great treat... and the pedicures are near essential to keep my nails trimmed. Presently on vacation and noticing traveling is harder while pregnant.

  • So how did your week go? Any fitness victories? Any troubles? Just okay, I was out of commission for 2 days with a stomach bug so I only got my walking in 3 days this week. We've got great weather here today so on my way back home from work, I'll get off a few stops earlier on the train to get some extra steps. Back troubles are still continuing, so I'm hoping that some prenatal yoga tonight will help.

Are you treating yourself to anything during this pregnancy? Pedicures, massage, vacation, sleeping in? I'm going to start getting massages soon which will hopefully help with the back pain. I've been treating myself to more frequent hair appointments (prefer that to manicures and pedicures) and a few new makeup purchases (my favorite indulgence!)

  • Not too bad fitness wise.  I was still sick on the weekend, but made it to the gym on Monday and Wednesday for cardio and weights.  It was the Terry Fox run at school yesterday, so I managed to get a 45 minute walk in while working :).  Going to try to do a yoga video after work today.

I went for acupuncture during the first Tri and am planning to start up again at 36 weeks.  I've been for one massage so far and am planning to go again this month.  Went for a pedi last week!  Wish I could sleep in, but seem to be better at going to bed early.

  • I only managed to get in 3 Crossfit workouts this week and no yoga, between some crazy stuff at work and GTT on Wednesday (which looks like I passed, yay!), but I'm going to leave work a little early this afternoon and hit the gym.

I get a pedicure every 3-4 weeks which is something I started doing early this year before I was pregnant, and I love it. Manicures are kind of a waste for me since I workout with dumbbells and barbells, and I sit at a computer all day, and both of those things tend to trash my nails. And man, do I wish I could sleep in! Even on weekends when I could, my body seems to think between 6-7am is just a peachy time to wake up.

  • @tiffanymyers Hooray for a daily jog! That's awesome.

@acac104 - Pedicures are pretty wonderful. Especially now that my toes seem especially far away ;)

@anna930 Congrats on keeping  up with your walking. I'm sorry to hear about the GTT fail, but I'm glad you're getting baby what he/she needs. My doc recommended upping my protein this week, too.

@cheekers2010 Sorry you got robbed of your class this week. I hope you have better luck next week! I'm curious about the acupuncture - do you find it takes a few sessions to feel a difference, or do you feel improvement right away?

@colliebabe Hooray for a good week! And I'm glad you got a massage. I'm looking forward to getting one, too.

@hufflepuff42 A little vacation sounds wonderful! I hope the weather cooperates a bit more next week.

@serunatu I'm so glad the pool is working for you. That's great! Enjoy your deluxe pedicure :)

@ladythrice Hooray for walking! I hope you do get your massage, too.

@candechicago Sorry you are feeling a bit funky today. It sounds like a good move to relax. Hope your vacation is wonderful!

@mcr957 - Oh no, a stomach bug?! Blech. Getting off the train early is a kind of brilliant, sneaky move to get more walking in. Kudos!

@brookey79 - I hope you're feeling better. It sounds like you managed to get in a lot of good exercise this week!

@apsalartoll Hope your gym plan this afternoon works out and you get some good news about your GTT. I'm with you on the manicures - I just wreck them. But pedicures are definitely a treat!

  • So my week was sadly light on fitness. I'm finally getting over that cold I caught last week, but I've been slow at getting back to exercise. I did get in one walk, and one short pilates DVD, so at least I did something! But I'm aiming to get in a bit more this weekend - some yoga and hiking if it isn't too hot.

I was thinking about little indulgences because I've been getting monthly pedicures with a friend who is also due in December and it's been surprisingly wonderful. I usually hate those massage chairs they have, but this last time we went the massage chair felt A-MAZ-ING. It has me thinking that I've got to book a prenatal massage soon, even if it is pricey.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!!

Maybe I can hire this guy for the massage. I bet he'd work for pretty cheap...

  • @megbmeg - I have a seriously messed up back which is why I started acupuncture.  So, it took about 4 sessions before I noticed a difference.  Now, I only go twice a month and I'm able to maintain a fairly good feeling.

  • So how did your week go? Any fitness victories? Any troubles?
Much better than last week! I've gotten in all my workouts so I am happy about that. I've started to get a little bit of pain in my ligaments where my leg and crotch meet so that's no fun, but hopefully adding some more stretching afterwards will keep that at bay!

Are you treating yourself to anything during this pregnancy? Pedicures, massage, vacation, sleeping in?
Not really, I am going to get a pedicure today because I am doing my maternity pictures next Thursday!

  • Workouts have been great this week! I was struggling running, but started using k-tape. It's like having a sports bra on your belly. Back to running every other day and biking on my off running days. I also do P90X everyday.

I get a manicure and pedicure every 3-4 weeks. We have a place that serves wine, so I'm the DD for my girlfriends. It's the best combination of HH and spa, that way my girlfriends know I feel included. :)
I'm going to start getting massages again soon. I really didn't feel up to it until now. We have a Massage Envy in town, and my regular girl that I went to pre pregnancy is certified for prenatal, so feel good about it.
  • This week was much better than last week. I got in ~ 8 miles and tackled some major chores around the house. I didn't do any squats/lunges because I was still resting my knee but I will definitely try to get some in this week.

I have the ability to sleep in on the weekends but it usually doesn't happen because my internal clock still insists I wake at the same time. I am looking into getting a prenatal massage next month when we get back from a camping trip :)

  • Good week at the pool including some aquafit classes. I'm feeling heavier and very slow in the lane swims now. I went to my monthly OB appointment on Wed and both my weight and blood pressure were down slightly from last month. Nothing to signify, but it drove home to me the value of continuing the exercise even if I feel quite ponderous now!!

No treats for self that cost anything, but I LOVE my bubble bath each night before bed!! It's definitely a just-for-me part of my day.
  • @kimberlyC1984 Hooray for a much better week. Hope you enjoy your pedicure. And that's exciting about photos next week. Are you doing them at home or at a special location?

@gradschoolmom1234 I'm impressed you got in those walks even though you had a bad stomach day. Yuck! I'm glad the massage was awesome. I think I need to just pull the trigger on an appt.

@linden25 congrats on a good week! You're so sweet to give your gift certificates to your DH. I confess, I think I'd hoard them and use them post-baby for myself ;)

@MGWC I'm glad you had a great week. Your pedicure place sounds pretty amazing.

@sysakbaby Hooray for a much-improved week! I bet it felt really good to get those big chores crossed off your list. I feel like I just keep adding to my list lately!! I'm also kind of glad to hear you're going camping soon. We have a weekend trip scheduled in mid-October, and when I booked it I didn't stop to think that I'd be something like 32 weeks pregnant. I'm hoping it'll still be fun.

@mousy345 I'm glad it turned out that the aquafit classes were enjoyable, and it's so great that you found an almost free way to treat yourself every night. Very smart!

  • You guys are some serious inspiration!  So impressed by how you're all still going strong.

I don't post on this thread every week because frankly I don't deserve to!  This week was particularly poor.  Made it to the gym Tuesday & today where I do 30 minutes of cardio - usually a mix of incline walking and ellipitcal.

Usually DH picks me up from work (we have one car & carpool), but on Monday I decided to walk home (and metro) and I'm going to walk tonight.  So at least that gets me moving a little.

I really need to start incorporating some of the exercises in our Bradley Birth workbook.  That's one of my weekend goals.

I'm actually flying to NC (used to be home) and having someone I know do them. So all I know is that it will be outdoors! :)

  • Ugh! Been bad but so busy with moving, puppy, and school. I gained 20lbs in three weeks so my doctors are concerned. My thyroid is also all out of wack again which may play a roll in the gain. I have an ultrasound on the 10th to check the baby.

  • My week was ok, I got to the gym 3 days. I've been getting very crampy in the evenings (when I work out - getting up at 4:30am is NOT an option), so I've done cardio and very light weights with higher reps.

As for treating myself, I haven't yet, but will be scheduling a massage very soon...I think it will be every other week from here on out.
