baby #2 should I nurse and pump?

I only pumped with dd 1 when I went back to work four months after she was born. But had no extra stash. Should I start pumping right away in addition to nursing? If so how soon? And when would I do it? I remember especially in the first few weeks she nursed for so long on both sides, im not sure when I would fit pumping in?

Re: baby #2 should I nurse and pump?

  • if you want to create a freezer stash of BM, yes, you'll want to start pumping before you go back to work. you probably want to wait to start pumping until baby is 3-4 weeks old and your supply has been established. if you pump too much at the beginning, it will tell your body to produce more milk and then you will create an oversupply.

a good time to pump is in the morning, since that is when your supply tends to be highest. i found it easiest to pump one side while DS nursed on the other side. that way i didn't have to worry about what DS was doing/needing when i was pumping.
