My unborn child only likes junk...

I am trying desperately to be healthy during this pregnancy because I really don't want to deal with the aftermath later.

But...

Peanut butter and jelly? My unborn child isn't interested. Puke.

Chicken noodle soup? Psh. NOPE.

Sugar free pudding pack? Try again.

Cheddar and sour cream chips from the work vending machine? Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!

WTF?! PB&J makes me vomit but cheddar and sour cream chips go down like nothing?!

Oh, the LO also loves grilled cheese as long as it's not made with Mexican shredded cheese.

Any tips, tricks, suggestions? I will be ginormous if we keep this up.

Re: My unborn child only likes junk...

  • It's called self control. Your unborn child isn't working a remote control of your arms and hands getting the junk food. I understand pregnancy cravings, but you just have to make yourself eat better and not give into the junk all the time.

  • Same problem. I was vegan before - and tried to eat raw and plan to be vegan after - but meat, some cheese and fries are all I want to eat. I'm doing it - my body wants it and right now it's not a fight worth having.

Tart and thick fruits I can tolerate - like peaches (if not too sweet), pears, some apples, and orange juice with pulp and lemonade.

  • Yea I have the same problem and to the person who commented first about self control...Right now it has nothing to do with self control or pregnancy cravings it has to do with the fact that when I eat something healthy, like last night I had vegetable soup I puke it up right away...then I tried some peanut butter toast, nope no good either but the icecream I proceeded to eat after my first 2 attempts stayed down like nothing. I don't get it

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I found ice cream goes down easy, too. I did pick up Ben & Jerry's yogurt. Same flavors, just with yogurt. I didn't feel so guilty.

I was vegan pre pregnancy too! Cheers to that. I ate about 98% clean. No joke. Kale/spinach smoothie to start my day, hummus sandwich on whole grain, quinoa, black beans, loads of veggies fruits etc etc you get the point. It all makes me yack thinking about it. It's not a matter of self control for me or probably you ladies as well. It's just not anything I can get down and I really do hope that changes. Right now it's fries, pasta, bagels, and all things carb based...and not healthy carbs. Sucky.

  • Maybe try healthy things in a different way? Some options I can think up off the top of my head are veggies with hummus, grilled chicken wraps, or whole grain muffins with fruit? Sometimes when I am not feeling well I pack a whole bunch of different healthy things so that when one thing doesn't work I have other healthy alternatives so I am not stuck relying on vending machines. For instance today on top of my lunch I have carrot sticks, granola bars, hummus, and an apple to try.

Are you taking your pre-natal vitamins still? Have you talked to your doctor about going on nausea pills? Zofran did wonders for me as I couldn't keep anything down for a while.

Good luck! My nausea has just stopped this week, I hope it gets better for you.

  • Lol.

Every pregnant woman indulges in something unhealthy. Nothing wrong with that in moderation. The way your OP sounded was you choose junk over the healthy options too much. Yes, sometimes you can't keep anything down except ice cream or chips, but there are many things you can substitute as well as using self control on what you eat every day. Instead of ice cream try frozen yogurt. Instead of greasy Lays chips try pita chips or baked chips. Instead of candy try your favorite fruit. There are easy ways to avoid junk and still getting your cravings satisfied...
  • I found last pregnancy carbs and dairy were my go to. I ate half a dominos pizza like once a week :/

If it makes you feel better I gained a normal amount of weight. I think what worked for me was trying to stay active. I walked a lot and I think that helped.

I'm all about making healthy choices but you also need calories and nutrients. What worked for me was eating what I could (even if it's pizza and chips or whatever) and lots of walking. :)

Sorry no tips on tricking you body into eating different foods. But staying active can help with excess weight gain if that's your concern :)

I had a rough go of it during weeks 9-10. Things got a tad quieter during the 11th and 12th weeks. Now almost into week 14, the stomach is irritated again. It's quite a roller coaster. That said, B6 vitamins were helping curb the nausea, so my OB didn't find it necessary to go beyond that. I don't puke every day, so they don't see me as a candidate for something like Zofran.

And I do take prenatal vitamins, though I was literally in the middle of taking them yesterday when I had to flee for the bathroom. But normally I take them and they stay down :)

I like some of your suggestions. Thank you!

  • I am in the same boat. I have eaten worse in the past couple weeks then I have my whole life. My doctor said until the MS clears up eat whatever you can and just make sure you take the prenatal's. I am slowly adding in fruits and veggies but still staying away from meat.

I found that adding in bland fruits and veggies first helped get use to it again. Smoothies also have really helped. But honestly don't beat yourself up, eat what you can to keep your strength up and know it will get better. 14 weeks and I can FINALLY drink water again!!
  • I was that way until about 15 weeks, where all I wanted was crap food. Now I'm loving fruits, veggies, salads, homemade applesauce, etc. Don't get me wrong, I still love me some carbs. My favorite late night snack, for some reason, is from scratch "ghetto chicken soup" (as I call it)... chicken bullion cubes, water (obviously), garlic salt, crushed red pepper, and noodles. Delish.
  • The other thing that helps me is my Nutribullet. I make a smoothie as much as possible and put in nothing but healthy stuff fruits and veggies. Im able to hold that down usually. I decided to make my smoothie with milk yesterday and well that didn't work out. Ironically too I puked up every single pre natal pill I took then I tried the pre natal gummies and haven't puked up a single one lol which is sad that this problem is so bad that I can only take the candy type version of my prenatals lol

  • I'm 14 weeks, so far I've gained nothing but lost about 20lbs. On Zofran for the nausea, kinda starting to get an appetite this week. Meat does not sit well with me. And it seems I'm the opposite of you ladies, to where the only thing I am able to keep down is fresh fruit and *some* raw veggies. PB&J is my friend. As well as Carnation instant breakfast just to get something in me.

Exact same situation here! I still have some black bean and quinoa stuff in my freezer and everytime I look at it I gag, but I miss them so much! Kale, kiwi, avocado and leeks I miss the most but when I physically see them... nope nope nope. Hand me a giant bowl of fettuccini alfredo please. The only way I can eat a lot of veggies is if I go out for Indian and get a spicy korma or curry. I can eat anything Indian no problem, but I had it a lot as a child so maybe that's why.
I haven't ventured back into the world of meat though. I dont think I ever could. It's just been too long and it's too weird to me now.

Not to make you jealous or anything, but after typing that I texted SO and he agreed to pick up some pakora and navratan korma for dinner!! Wooo! Between this thread and the cereal talk in that AW thread I feel like the biggest fatty ever.
Are there (quality) Indian food places near you? Maybe you could just start having it around all the time so he has no choice but to aquire a taste for it :p I think pregnancy cravings is your perfect excuse!

  • right now It seems like you need to eat what you can, when you can.

I had to remind myself of that daily for the first 13 weeks. I felt like a horrible person and mom for eating all the junk. it was all I could get down, and keep down. when the ms passed things got better.

keep taking your vitamin and keep trying to get in some healthy stuff. it got better for me. now I eat everything in sight! good, bad, don't matter as long as im eating it LOL!!

    IT'S A BOY!!!!!!

  • I'm able to keep most foods down now in smaller portions. But I still don't like most junk food. The sweets make me gag shortly after eating. But trust me, I do try them every occassion I can. One of these days those amazing looking cookies will stay down without a fight. lol Drinking water does help me feel better.

I mostly eat fruit right now. Sooo goooood!! Basically nature's candy... I'll take it.

  • I feel you. I was in the middle of eating a spinach salad yesterday and it all came immediately right back up. Half an hour later, I was starving so I tried some MacNCheese and it went down no problem. I try to eat healthy and can usually get down at least 2-3 servings of fruits/veggies per day but if I'm feeling queasy I pretty much stick to cereal and MacNCheese. And if it's a really bad day, I'll only eat saltines with Gingerale. Just do your best, and don't be too hard on yourself.
  • OMG I'm the SAME way! And I totally agree, it's nothing to do with self control!!!! I'm not usually a junk food buff either, but during this pregnancy, my body rejects anything that isn't pasta, pizza, carbs, cheese, or Chinese food. I decided enough is enough, and bought a grilled chicken pita for lunch yesterday. I got through about 1/2 and felt sooo sick I had to throw the rest out and run to the bathroom. But the pizza slice i got for dinner because I was extremely f***ing hungry was the most amazing and delicious thing in the world, and made me feel a LOT better. I too haven't gained any weight during the pregnancy so far, despite my terrible food choices. I'd GLADY eat a Kale salad, if only my body would accept it!!!!!

My favorite.  I officially hate you and am jealous <3 We have ONE really good place but they're really lacking in service so that doesn't help my case. I may order it to go tonight though if he's stuck working late...  Just so good.

  • Love my kitty. Lays by my belly and purrs. I think the baby loves it, or will, when he can feel it better. :)
  • Am I the only one confused as to how PBJs , chicken noodle soup, and snack pack puddings are healthy? ...

Besides that, I get what you're saying OP. And yes, I think some people use pregnancy as an excuse to eat shit, but I also know some people really struggle with keeping any food down and do what works. I think Cindy jumped down your throat unnecessarily.

People talk in the random thread about the shit they eat all the time and I never hear people get pissy about self control so I don't know where that piece of judgment came from.

I was definitely side eyeing the "healthy" food too
Homemade chicken soup (chicken and dumplings, actually). I don't like nuts, which everyone lists as a good snack. So I go with peanut butter and jelly on whole wheat bread (because white bread is empty of nutrition). Sugar free pudding pack - better than a hot fudge sundae with a tower of whipped cream, no?
