Prenatal Massage

So my family always does a girls day whenever someone in our family gets married. This time it was for my cousin's fiance. We went to have massages and so I figured I'd give the prenatal massage a try. It was so awful. I had to lay on my side the whole time bc they didn't have an actual prenatal massage table. My arm was numb by the time I got off the table and the woman was so afraid to actually massage me it felt like she was just softly rubbing my back. I don't know if this is a common experience but I will never waste money on one of those again! Blah.

Re: Prenatal Massage

  • Oh man that sucks! You gotta find someone with a maternity pillow and that has worked with pregnant women before. I have a woman that I have been getting massages from once or twice a year, and was so happy with my first pregnancy to find out she has the pillow to use. It makes such a big difference!

  • Sorry you didn't like your experience! I am not bothered at all by laying on my side and get a prenatal massage every month!

I definitely think there are better experiences out there. I'd suggest looking online for reviews and such.

  • That's too bad! I've only had a prenatal massage once, but it was amazing! I was also on my side but didn't have any problems with that.
  • It may have just been a bad experience but I was so uncomfortable on my side on that table!

  • That is NOT how it's supposed to be!! Prenatal massages can be lifesavers, you just have to find someone who is experienced and a good for for you. I'm really sorry that happened!

  • And if you are uncomfortable speak up! They can move and adjust you to make you comfortable. As a regular massage goer though, I'll tell you that they are generally different from a non-prenatal massage. I love a good, strong deep tissue massage but during pregnancy they don't recommend it. There are also pressure points to consider. I suggest trying another therapist and let them know the issues you had previously before they even start working on you.

  • I just had a prenatal massage a couple of weeks ago and it was phenomenal. They had a special table and made sure to ask about pressure and comfort. I do go to a fancier spa though. Definitely ask around or just call a place and see if they have a special table or pillow for your growing belly. It should be a fun relaxing experience. I'm sorry you had a bad one.

  • I haven't found a close place with a pregnancy table (any north Dallas, Frisco recs?)

I normally love a deep tissue massage so the prenatal ones are ok.  I carry stress in my neck/shoulders so laying on my side isn't relaxing in those areas.  I agree that some therapists seem overly timid to massage you- still looking for a good one.

  • That sucks! When I had them in the past it was always laying on my side, I just assumed this was the way it was done! Lol

  • Booo, bad massages suck!  I agree with all the PP's - that isn't the norm, you just have to look for a recommended masseuse!  I got two when I was pregnant with DD.  The first was so-so and I was laying on my side like you so it was uncomfortable.  The second time I went to a great masseuse who I had used before and it was amazing.  They had a belly table to I could lay flat and she used hard pressure where she was able and still worked on the muscles on my back where she wasn't able to press as hard.

  • I got one this week at my chiropractor and it was actually painful! She beat my ass up! They did have a special pillow that my belly and boobs went in so at least that wasn't uncomfortable. But it wasn't relaxing at all. It was my first prenatal massage so I don't know if that was normal or because it was done for more than just relaxation since I was at my chiro. (Been having sciatic nerve pain on my right side so she was trying to work it out.)

Anyways, sorry yours sucked! I definitely will get recommendations next time I want one.

  • I had one prenatal massage with DS, and two so far this pregnancy. All were side laying, but gave me a body pillow to snuggle with/lean on so my belly was supported and I could relax my shoulders. But, I agree that it's not the deep tissue massage I prefer. I did tell each masseuse that I want them to push as hard as they are comfortable doing, since I have knots to work out and I'm not delicate. ;) I did not know about belly pillows/tables that allow laying down flat. Maybe I'll try to find one of those sometime.
