Zumba anyone?

Is anyone still going to zumba?

I just love zumba and I've been going 3 times a week throughout the pregnancy.  But it's starting to get really hard.  My legs get tired very quickly and I find it hard to make it to the end of class.  It's not so much aerobically difficult as muscular.  I'm 28 weeks.

Anyone else doing zumba or other exercise and finding that it's getting harder and harder?  Any good ideas for modifying?

Re: Zumba anyone?

  • Yep. I do Zumba 2-3 times a week and UJam fitness one day. It is more difficult but at this point I'm modifying my moves pretty heavily. I take care not to jump or bounce too hard and I'm being careful with squats (per my chiro...my back is messed up). Some days my legs are more tired then others - usually at the end of the week after working out 4 days in a row. I'm planning on continuing until I deliver. That's what I did with my son. It is possible!

My sister teaches 3 times a week so I go to her classes in addition to my other workouts. I am still doing the whole workout for the most part but can't shake my hips as vigarously as I used to without getting that side stitch feeling. I have noticed my calves are more tired now when doing any of the bouncing exercises.

A girl in one of the classes went right up until 39.5 weeks. She left class at 8 pm one night and had the baby that night! I plan to keep going until the end too.

ETA: I would modify by not doing the exercises full out and making your moves a little smaller if you can. It's hard to describe with showing it.

  • I am not doing it with this pregnancy, but I did it with my first pregnancy.  I can't remember when I stopped, but my SPD got so bad that I couldn't do it anymore.  If you feel up to it and your dr is ok with it, I'd do it as long as you can.  I loved it and wish I were doing it this time around because I swear it made me feel so much better.  Plus, its fun :)

I modified by making my moves a little smaller, like @colliebabe said above.  I also didn't do the jumps, I'd either squat or "bounce."  I did notice my calves would be more sore sometimes and my back would get tight, but I just made sure I stretched enough.

  • I've noticed other pregnant women saying they cut out the jumping too.  The jumping isn't what seems difficult.  That still seems comfortable and comparatively easy.

It's the lunging, standing on tippie toes, and squatting that makes my legs sooo tired.
  • I'm 29 weeks and still doing Zumba about three times a week. I don't do a lot of the jumps either, or I keep my jumps low to the ground. If I start to get too fatigued I take a little break, which I didn't have to do before, but I plan on continuing as long as I can.

Zumba made me want to die before pregancy so high five to you insane women.
Right?! I tried it once prepregnancy. I felt like an uncoordinated, lumpy, clunky oaf.
When you've been doing it a long time, it feels pretty comfortable.  Or at least you forget that you look like an idiot.  I'm pretty sure that watching a 7 month pregnant woman do Zumba is hysterical.  Hopefully no one is secretly taping me!

I was teaching 2 zumba classes a week and 3 ujam classes a week as well... due to contractions while teaching I have had to cut back to teaching only 2 classes a week. Ujam is more athletic than zumba which I may have to cut out completely soon :(

    that's a bummer! I hope you're able to continue.
