Night light or pitch black in the nursery?

I keep a night light on in the nursery, mostly cuz I feel like LO would be scared in the dark. Also then I can see when I have to check on him. I'm wondering if an all dark room would help with sleep. What do you do?

Re: Night light or pitch black in the nursery?

  • Our monitor has a little light (soft glow... If that makes sense) that we leave on. Though we tend to turn on the hallway light when we go in to check/MOTN feeding.

  • I have a digital clock in the nursery that provides minimal light so I can see when I go in to check on DS. It faces away from the crib so it doesn't seem to bother him.
  • He sleeps with us but I have a nightlight on in our bathroom.
  • We have a motion sensing night light which is mostly so I don't fall on my ass tripping over her activity mat or something.  Otherwise it is pitch black.
  • This.

We have an LED night light. I've never tested LO's sleep without one.

  • We have a little light on the opposite side of DS's room.  But if we're away we don't worry about bringing a light with us.  He'll sleep either way.

  • No light. In fact, I put blackout shades on all the bedroom windows to block streetlights and early morning sun and we all sleep much better now.
  • I used to have a night light but then I realized LO seemed to sleep better/go back to sleep better on his own if it were totally dark. The monitor above the crib has a little light, though.
  • No light in her room but there's a pretty bright street light outside her window so it's not completely dark either.

  • We have a little light that projects into the ceiling. It has moons and stars. When we travel though it is pitch black and LO does fine then too.

  • I keep a night light on in the bathroom across the hall from her room. Helps me see when I get up during the night. When I go in to check on her or nurse, I leave the door open a bit and it gives me enough light to see.
  • I turn on her kinderglo nightlight if I have to nurse her MOTN, and keep it on for the remainder of the night. However, the side of her crib is blocked from any direct light and the night light is behind a basket. I only have one in DS's room so he can find his paci. DD is old enough to be afraid and she has a princess projector one-it's super cool.

  • We have a battery-powered night light that I turn on so I can see during nighttime feedings. It shuts off automatically after 30 mins. I bet this will be great for him to use himself when he's a little older!
  • I think I read on babycenter that babies aren't afraid of the dark and sleep best in as dark a room as possible. We have blackout curtains in her room and ours. We have a nightlight we bought from IKEA for when we put her down for the night and MOTN feeding. It's right next to the door so across the room from her crib, plus we turn it off when we leave the room so she sleeps in near pitch black (some light leaks around the edge of the curtains).
  • Her sound machine has a blue light on it and it is actually starting to distract her- trying to position it now so she can't see it
  • Dark as possible. When we put them down awake we play a turtle that does a light show and music for 5 min and then turns off, after that it is pitch black, we even have blackout curtains. They will sleep from 7:30p to 6:30a just fine. If they do wake up at 4am it is just to eat and I feed them in the dark, when they are done they go right back to sleep.

  • Man I can't wait til I can say "if I have a motn feeding" instead of "when I feed
Him" :-) I think I might try the hall light for feeding and checks and no light in the room. Perhaps that will prevent any future motn 2 hr crib parties :-)
  • We do dark, and when I go in I can usually see with the monitor light or hall light on

  • Our white noise machine has a night light. It seems bright so sometimes at night i cover it with a burp cloth to dim it. Even with blackout curtains their room isnt pitch black for much of their sleeping time (naps + bedtime and wakeup time)

Yeah, "afraid of the dark" isn't something that happens until way later. DS sleeps in our room sans nightlight. I nurse him at night in the office (right across from ours) with a nightlight so I don't fall on my ass. His nursery doesn't have a nightlight.

At 2.5, DD just started becoming nervous if she wakes up and it's pitch black in her room. She now sleeps with a nightlight turned on in her bathroom / bathroom door open.

  • Super dark, blackout shades and no light at all. If I go in I open the bathroom door across the hall and put on the shower light only.
  • I keep a dimmed lamp on in her room but I'm kicking myself for it and have been dimming it more and more so we can get back to no light.

Although during the summer, the sun never sets so she's used to sleeping with light.

  • Nightlight on. But after reading these responses I'm tempted to turn it off and see if the sleep improves (not that's it's horrible, but still..)
  • Blackout. And a occasional cell phone glow to the face for midnight breathing checks.

Same here. Except mine has been horrible lately :(
  • Blackout curtains and as little light as possible. DD has sheer pink curtains and sleeps great anywhere which I was hoping would be the same for him but noooope not the same unfortunately
