Circumcision care

So, I forgot to ask my pedi this and can't find it online, but I know when your son is circumcised, you have to push back the glans to clean it and to keep it from reforming over the head. My question is how old/ what age do you do this? They didn't really tell me anything in the hospital or at the pedi's office anything about retraction, just how to clean it and when to call. Also, I should mention he's two weeks old and his circumcision is fully healed.

Re: Circumcision care

  • I would recommend calling your own pedi because different docs have different recommendations. My DS was circ'd at 2 weeks old, a week later I was told to continue to push back the glands until the next check. The next check was at the 2 month mark, at which point my pedi said it was ok to stop pushing it back.

  • Okey doke, thanks! My pedi just didn't say anything, so I'm wondering if I even have to it not, because I'm not sure exactly how it's supposed to look. I will def give my pedi a call, though!
  • Ds was circed the day after he was born. We rolled the skin down every time it was up around his glans until it was fully healed, a week later. It hasn't gone back up since it finished healing, but if I see it up again, I'd pull it down.

  • @mrsdanielleM2010‌ see, the only thing we were told was to keep Vaseline and gauze on it until it heals. I'm guessing, since the pedi said it looked great, that all is well, but I am still going to ask about that.
  • We were told not to mess with it or clean it with anything. It healed really well.

This. I also realized I have no idea what it's supposed to look like while healing. I thought for sure it was infected or getting there, and the pedi said it looked perfect. It never hurts to call though!

  • DS had a plastibell. I was told not to put anything on it like A&D or Vaseline. I needed to keep it clean and dry until the bell dried up and fell off. But I could bathe and change him like I usually do. After it fell off I called my pedi bc they never told me what to do after it fell off and they said don't let the skin grow up and if it looks like it is then just push it back, clean it, and put some ointment on it so it doesn't stick to the diaper.
  • I would call the doctor and see what they want you to do. I know we put A&D on it during every change in the nursury during my maternity clinicals. We instructed our moms to do the same and other then that, to not mess with it.

Same here and we did the same for DS1 and his circ healed just fine

  • DS was circed at 2 days old and we were told to just put vaseline on it until it was no longer red and looked like normal skin color (which was maybe a week later). Yesterday we had his one month check-up and the Pedi told us to start pulling it back and putting on vaseline again at every diaper change until our next appt at the 2 month mark.

I will say, though, that our Pedi made it sound like we should have been pulling it back all along even though this was the first time we were told this...
This...which is frustrating.  Our twins were circed 2 days after birth.  We were told to use ointment and gauze and nothing about pushing it back.  We were especially told to steer clear of C's because he had a clot.  The pedi said they were both healing fine, but now C has an adhesion and the OB was surprised that we hadn't been pulling the skin back.  If I had known, I would have.  I'm upset that he may have to endure further discomfort, we're having the pedi check it again.

  • I was just wondering about circ care today and was mad I didnt ask more questions at his 1 week appointment today.   We were told to just put vasoline/gauze on it and it looked great.  I have no idea how long to even keep putting the gauze/vasoline on it.

Update: so, found out from my FIL, not my pedi, that the little wrinkle of skin below the mushroom head is what is supposed to be cleaned around at diaper changes and bath time. The reason I wasn't sure what I should be pulling back is because he said there's really barely anything to pull back at his age. He said for both if his boys, you basically just clean around the bottom of the tip of the penis, and you don't really have to do a whole lot of pushing back, because there's just not a lot of excess skin there right now. So, the reason my pedi wasn't concerned is because it looks exactly how it's supposed to. Thanks for the advice, and I hope this may help anyone else who is unsure of infant post circumcision care.
