"Sorry, there are no doctors here after 5"

I'm starting to have a really bad feeling about my doctors' office. The first instance was when I was in a bad depression and called to see someone. The doctor just said, "depression won't hurt the baby" and told me to wait two weeks for my scheduled appointment to bring it up. Today, I've had a bad headache since 10AM and Tylenol is not doing a thing. I've been unable to keep down food either (water is good though). I called around 4:30 but was on hold until 5. Just now got off the phone with the nurse who basically said, "well, I don't know what to do about that. Call back tomorrow when a doctor can write you something"  I asked if there was someone on call but she said it didn't sound like something serious enough to call them in for.

So, I guess I'm on my own. Anyone want to help me with medical advice today? Something that works better than Tylenol would be awesome. I've already been my own doctor by checking my blood pressure to be sure it's not that but now I'm at a loss. I don't know if I can handle this until tomorrow. Ugh... advice?

  • I'm sorry you're not getting the support you need from your doctor's office. Have you brought up these concerns to your doctor about how call ins have been going?

For headache, my doctor said the first thing they will recommend every time is a bit of caffeine. Have you had any today?

  • Im sorry youre not feeling well. I dont have advice i just hope you feel better soon :/
  • That is craziness!  I can't believe they brushed you off twice....that is bullshit.

You might want to try and call L&D at the hospital and see what they think.  When I had issues with my last pregnancy and it was after hours, they would get in touch with the on call doctor and call me back.

  • If I can't get my doctor I call triage at the hospital.  Throwing up with a really bad headache I think warrants a call.  Hope you feel better soon.

  • I've been getting occasional migraines and no migraine meds so when the caffeine/Tylenol combo doesn't work I do a few things. Lay down, rest my eyes, alternating hot and cold compresses on my forehead.

Those things help to keep the pain manageable but I've had bad ones that have lasted two days.

My doctor also said to avoid bending over (blood rushing to your head doesn't help) and keep my head propped and feet up when I lay down.

Sorry I have nothing else, I'd be annoyed getting the brush off at your office that way :( hope you feel better soon!

  • New discovery for me--peppermint oil! Can get it at GNC and some pharmacies/Walmart.. Rub a little on your temples. 100% safe, been using it all week.
  • I'm with everyone else, find a new dr! I get migraines, usually an ice pack on the base of my skull and caffeine will help, try to drink as much water as you can. A warm bath while using the ice pack feels good too. I can't promise it'll go away, but it normally makes mine at least bearable.
  • Reading comprehension is clearly not my forte today. I am glad your blood pressure isn't an issue.

I was much worse earlier in the day but now it's not too bad. I can type on my phone and all that. So maybe a 4.5/10.  I'm hoping all these suggestions help bring it down.

I completely agree with your concern though. What if I was a normal, non-paranoid person who didn't have a blood pressure monitor at home? I'm lucky I know some of the things to watch for but not everyone who goes there will know the signs of something serious. I'm really disturbed by their lack of care.

  • Try peppermint oil on your temples. It's helped me at times. Hope you feel better soon!
  • Just wanted to come back and give you creepy Internet hugs. Please take care of yourself and let us know how you are doing.

I don't like seeing one of my snark sisters in pain. :(
  • Switch doctors!  Yes, I'm repeating everyone else.  I would be livid if I waited on hold for 30 minutes and then the nurse dismissed my concern without allow me to talk to the on-call.  Gah!

I hope everyone's suggestions are helping and you are chugging water and having a coke/coffee.

  • One more cote for change doctors. The depression brush off was bad enough. That's something they should always take seriously. Shame on them.

  • I just sent DH out for some iced coffee, a sandwich and new Tylenol.
I am definitely thinking about switching doctors now. I'll wait to talk to them at my next appointment first to see what they have to say about it. They might not know their nurse on the phone is being so dismissive.

I called L&D (thank you for suggesting it!) and the oncall doc said if I start getting pains in my abdomen or start seeing spots to come in regardless of my blood pressure readings. But since it's similar to what I had before, they are thinking it's probably dehydration. Which makes sense cause I'm trapped in part of the US that doesn't know it's fall yet. Our air con died overnight and my big pregnant self is not handling heat well. Now I'm sitting with my cold compress and a jug of water in my dark room. Hope this will be all I need today. Thank you all!
If your air is out, get your ass in the tub. Then, park it in front of a fan with water.
    This is a brilliant idea

  • Feel better @ColeyCannoli‌! I would for sure have a talk with your physician. That nurse handled that very poorly and if she was an employee of my practice I would want to know about it. GL in your OB search.

  • Sex is the best treatment for a headache. Seriously!
  • Late to the party, but just wanted to say I'm glad you're feeling a little better! Kudos to DH for thinking of the fan, popsicles, and peppermint oil. :)

And yeah, definitely consider switching OBs! I would be fuming if I were treated the way you have been.
  • @ColeyCannoli‌ I'm glad you are feeling better. Your husband did well. Plz find another ob, make sure you relay your experience to your doctor first. Hang in there!
  • Ditto @Ainslie325 and @danisgossipgirl

Damn. That really sucks. It really blows when a provider brushes off a legitimate medical concern. I'm sorry your doctor's practice has been less than helpful with addressing your concerns. I remember your thread about the depression coming on and being told you needed to wait. I'd definitely start searching for a new practice and express your concerns to your current one.

I used to get a lot of awful headaches during the beginning and mid second trimester, and iced coffee and a quiet and dark room seemed to help. I usually did that after a nice relaxing shower.

    (((hugs)))

  • So sorry you are dealing with this! I know this is a weird question - but are you constipated? One of my good friends had migraines brought on by constipation in pregnancy. If course caffeine can kill two birds with one stone in that vein.

Aren't you in Spartanburg? What practice are you with? My whole family is MDs and my uncle was a pediatrician before retiring. I can ask him about your group - if you don't want to say, I can also just ask if he knows who is good up there. The only thing I can think of that would be worse than changing doctors right now is going through the next few months with a doctor I don't trust 100%.

I'm at the Woman's Clinic which I picked because it is literally across the street from my apartment. Any advice on other OBs would be awesome! Switching right now is overwhelming but I can't say I trust them. I hate feeling like I have to go into labor during business hours or get half-assed care. I like Spartanburg Regional though, where they delievered, they've been very nice.

I have been constipated today but I think it's also because I'm dehydrated. Pregnancy sure is fun :P

  • I'm only now noticing that it was one of the OBs in the practice who told you, over the phone, "Depression won't hurt the baby.  See you in two weeks."

This is beyond alarming.  I would tell whichever OB I see next exactly who said it and exactly what was said, then I'd tell them that you have found a new practice.
I checked my schedule and realized that the one who told me that will be the doc I see on Monday. Gonna have so many words.

  • No advice. But I can totally sympathize with you about mean nurses. I am started a new medication a few weeks ago for my Crohn's Disease and since it was 2 shots that I was expected to administer myself (without any prior instruction) I brought them along to my last OB appt and asked if a nurse could show me how. Well, first it took them forever to track down a nurse that felt comfortable showing me and then she had never seen or administered this type of shot, and then we had a lot of difficulty administering the shots. So I since the next time I am suppose to take the shots again is the same day as my 28 week appt, I called to ask them if someone could help me again because I didn't feel comfortable yet doing the shots myself- the nurse I talked to was incredibly rude to me and talked to me like I was 3 years old basically using the nicest voice, but saying mean things in a condecending manner. She told me that they could show me again, but that I really need to pay attention this time because I am supposed to do them myself. It was really the way she said it that upset me. I got off the phone and actually cried for an hour. It's stressful enough to be pregnant and not feel well so when you add the stress of having to give yourself two injections that you aren't really qualified to give yourself it's super intimidating and stressful. Why aren't these nurses more respectful - they know we are pregnant and going through a lot.

My drs office has been rude today also. They are closed for rosh hoshana and well, they told me that I need to get checked out for a blood clot in both legs immediately. I went that moment on Wednesday at 6:25 pm only to find out the left leg was the only one on the rx. So I said I'd wait until today to get it updated to both. Well, I called today and found out they're closed. Then the answering line tells me that a script is not urgent, yet I was told that excruciating non stop pain could mean a blood clot. So I ended up only getting the left leg done. It sucks that doctors can be so awful. Also their excuse if I ever have a concern is "you're pregnant, what do you expect?" I usually just want to hear that it is normal or within what normally happens not some smart ass reply like that. I'm going to try addressing it, but I'd really like to go somewhere new. This dr is rated as one of the best in the state and has the lowest c/s rate at our hospital. But they are giving me more stress than I deserve.

  • Also sorry you're dealing with headaches, op! I had them so bad at the beginning of my pregnancy and nothing would help. I couldn't sleep because of them but felt the only thing I wanted was sleep! :(

  • Glad you are feeling better and you will be looking to switch practices.

    Test
  • Definitely switch, based on the depression comment alone. You do NOT mess around with that during pregnancy or the postpartum period.

Also, late to the party, but a way to get some cooler air with a fan is to put a bowl of ice in front of the fan. The air above the ice bowl will be cooler as the ice melts, and then the fan blows the cooler air to you. My mom said they used to do this all the time when she was a kid and they didn't have A/C at all.

  • I'm sorry the receptionist is so insensitive and I hope you are feeling some relief from your headache. However I wouldn't base your judgement of your doctor on how the office staff behaves. The receptionists at my doctors office are notoriously bad but the doctors are great. I actually feel bad for them because I am sure their clients have left the group because the office staff is so off-putting but I bear either it to keep my doctors. Thats just my two cents. Feel better!!

@ColeyCannoli‌ how are you feeling today?
    Hey! Thank you for asking.
I was out of town all day and got a little sick on the long car ride but I'm still doing a lot better. I think it's the heat and dehydration. It's not that hot outside but inside my tiny apartment it is stifling. I'm very tired because sleep isn't working out all that well. At least baby still seems completely unfazed and has been enjoying using my bladder as a trampoline most of the day.

    @Courtneylovesjason2 - I'm better! Thank you

JulieC76 - Uuuugh, not cool. As if giving yourself a shot is easy. And they couldn't even do it, so how were you supposed to learn? I'm so sorry you have to deal with that. If you have an urgent care or even a CVS nearby, the PA or NP that works there might be cool with showing you (if you have your script with you).

@Meether - holy shit... I know I am late to this but I would seriously consider a trip to the ER. A blood clot is no joke. Not to scare you but my best friend's mom died at only 44 from one that she barely felt. If that pain is so intense, you need someone to take that shit seriously. Please please take care of yourself.

    Thank you everyone for responding!
